>People in Britain should be ready to serve in the military in the event of a war with Russia, the head of the British army has warned.
>General Patrick Sanders on Wednesday called on the British authorities to “mobilize the nation” to prepare for a war with Russia, in a speech at the International Armoured Vehicles exhibition in London.
>Although he does not support conscription, Sanders stressed the need for a “shift” in the minds of the British public to be mentally ready for a military conflict with Russia.
A really hard task. Even a large part of Redditors over here can’t let it get into their heads, as they prefer to live in their alternate reality while talking about some “paper tiger” and other such inanity.

Paper tigerists in the chat.
The Brits would probably surrender so they didn’t offend any of the Russians occupying the UK.
” Hear me out Trevor, we don’t want to offend the invading force. They might blow up the pub. Then where can we go for darts and a pint then. Think about it Trevor “.
Either the British are trying to get in Putins head .
Or Putin has lost his mind .
And he’s going to start a nuclear war in Europe.
There’s no way a Russian military that did not have enough troops and weapons 2 years ago , to hold on to 20% of Ukraine , is going to be able to invade NATO territory in a conventional war , right after the Ukraine war is over .
They don’t have the capability to do so . Unless Putin lives to be 90 , they don’t have enough time to build up their military to anywhere near the pre Ukraine war levels before Putin will be dead.
Nonsense and misleading. One general went off on a rant but was quickly dismissed by the higher ups. Yes the Army numbers are low and reservists are low, but we’re a long way away from conscription of the general population. A very long way.
Theres more to fighting than boots on the ground anyway.
We are.
Something is going on. Something has changed. In the past couple weeks multiple European countries have come out and said similar. They’re either worried about a Trump presidency, are preparing to cede Ukraine, or there’s some new intel doing the rounds.
They helped Hitler invade Poland, sat back and laughed while he bombed the crap out of us, but when Barbarossa began we started sending most of our shipments from America straight to the USSR. We tried so hard to help them after they didn’t lift a finger for us. Did they show any shame at all? F*** Russia.
This kind of thing keeps cropping up, but I just don’t see that it holds water considering Russia’s capabilities and performance. I hear your argument that it’s stupid to consider Russia a paper tiger and I agree wholeheartedly, it is. But it also makes no sense to overestimate them, and Russia is **objectively** weaker now relative to the rest of Europe than they have been for literally hundreds of years – you probably have to go back to something like 1750 to find them at a smaller territorial extent, and they’ve just spent 2 years destroying their stockpiled weapons and equipment from when they were a super-power whilst at the same time convincing us it was time to reverse our defence cuts and start improving things like munitions production.
That’s not to say that there aren’t improvements to be made to Europe’s armed forces – we **all** need to spend more to rectify our problems, and particularly to bring our armed forces into a fully war-ready state. For example in the UK half the army is geared towards low-level counter-insurgency style conflicts, the F-35 lacks appropriate munitions for many of the roles it should be able to perform, we have no AWACS systems anymore, we have barely any air defences and our air-force’s numbers are very low (largely thanks political decisions made in response to the debacle that is F-35 procurement). We ought to make sure that the European NATO allies have every capability required to fight a major war without US involvement at all.
All of these things need solving, but the idea that Russia presents an existential conventional threat which we’re going to need to implement conscription to counter…yeah – how? They literally haven’t made it past the Dnipro.
Imagine training a bunch of pro-palestinians to fight Russia. I’m fucking dying just thinking about it 😂
I think they know that Trump winning is a really high possibility, considering the conditions inside of the United States, the unpopularity of Biden, which means US support, or even membership of NATO is now in question. If Trump wins, they know they may be on their own, and without the US nuclear umbrella.
This is an old ass army general that spent his whole life training for the Cold War. Even what he says has to be taken with a grain a salt. The idea is not to fight Russia but to build an army large enough that it puts putin off going further west. The uk army fits into Wembley football stadium at the minute. He’s just saying we need more soldiers because 1. We look like an easy target and 2. We’ve invested in tech rather than ground troops thinking that conventional warfare wouldn’t work in this day and age but we’ve been proven wrong.
Oh and just to point out, Russia is producing 1000 tanks a year roughly, we have to try and keep up!
