There’s a lot of talk about excessive number of asylum seekers and also a lot of misinformation about immigration in general. It’s important to share real news about progress being made to tackle this issue.

  1. No matter what we do, we’re always going to have a problem with people from Leitrim.

  2. 12 months ago they were defending the list, why couldn’t they just agree increasing the list of was a good idea and get on with it!?

  3. Right but they’ll still keep coming and just be called economic migrants instead no?

  4. I work in homeless services. The amount of Somalis that are coming through our services just seems to keep increasing. A couple of them I’ve dealt with recently applied for asylum in Sweden, refused. Came here, granted.

Sweden/Germany were the 2 European countries that the majority of asylum seekers were going to as the gold standard locations but they have both clamped way down now, along with the rest of Europe.

We’re behind the curve on this, just like we have been on Ukrainians. If the rest of Europe is tightening up on asylum, we need to be doing that at the same time, not many months (or in the case of Ukraine, 2 years) later.

  5. While , I agree that some action is being taken- It is not enough and they need to stop infantilising the argument and name-calling. Like , if a person wants a homogenous Ireland then by means call him Far-right. But if you’re business is closing in Killarney or Mayo because 30% of the beds have been taken by asylum seekers , then you have a legitimate protest.

Also, we need studies to demonstrate that there is no connection to increased crime and the massive influx of people rather than the “trust me bro”. Calling everyone far-right, racist, talking about coffin ships , obligations etc is absolutely not working and they’ve lost control of the narrative entirely.

Edit; The absurdity of Leo (Welfare Cheats us all) Varadkar defending the employment record of Josef Puska in the Dáil was a particular low point in the history of the State.

  6. But we don’t deport anyone anyway, and most destroy their documentation and are still let into the country, so what difference does it make?

  7. Everyone just get leave to remain anyway so why bother with any checks at airport ?

  8. We need to enforce the laws that we do have instead of creating new ones. If we (Ireland) enforced the laws that we do have regarding asylum seekers, then it wouldn’t be an issue. And it would make the far right look even more ridiculous than they currently are.

  9. Step 1: enter country

Step 2: get sent to a hotel

    Step 3: leave hotel

This was the process of the people found in the shipping container in Wexford. How is it going to stop this scenario?

  10. Unless the deportations are ramped up from non-existent to fit for purpose, especially to be done automatically to anyone who shows up with destroyed documents, then this is just the standard FFG window dressing to appear to have done something while doing nothing.

  11. > talk about excessive number of asylum seekers and also a lot of misinformation about immigration in general.

    In what way?

  12. Without a passport, how do we determine where they are actually from. They should have translators working at front office and weeding out the chances, then immediate return to airport

  13. Just don’t let in anyone. There is no housing available. It’s not about race. It’s not about culture or anything else. There simply is no fucking place to house them!

  14. The reality is that all it does is makes rejections for Refugee status, subsidiary protection and permission to remain easier for the countries added to the list. It does absolutely nothing to stop the numbers coming in and more importantly people getting deported out.

It’ll also likely put way more pressure on the IPO to process these applicants and have a decision within 6 months to stop them from getting the right to work. Not to mention thanks to free legal aid, each applicant refused asylum are allowed to appealeach decision through a JR process.

A good basic step but not nearly good enough.

  15. Just so everyone knows, Ireland doesn’t have a deportation force…which means literally anyone can come here and stay.

  16. A genuine question here…. Why all of a sudden are they coming here? It seems like since last summer the numbers started increasing drastically. I know the war is on in Ukraine and them poor people are coming here but why asylum seekers? Has Irish law changed and we must accept a certain number? I don’t remember reading about it.
