  2. When Tata bought PT works they had a great interest in the massive coal deposits located directly behind the works; to the extent that they mapped them out and procured the mining rights, they also bought all the materials and prepared the foundations for a brand new coke oven battery.

    That new coking plant was never built, the present battery has reached the end of it’s life and the gas it provides to the works power station and the hot mill are going to vanish. This leaves Port Talbot with an even larger hole in its finances with the increased purchases of natural gas from the grid. A financially unsustainable position being made even worse Tata were placed into a position whereby only one option was available.
