Yemen’s Houthis launch their largest Red Sea drone and missile attack • FRANCE 24 English

We’re going to talk about this more with K Kean gorani who joins me now on set Kean talk us through the latest developments with the attacks and the consequences on the region well uh really this is the largest attack that the houes have launched on this Red Sea

Since the start but we’re really seen this being sort of a not a daily necessarily but very regular thing that they uh are really pounding at the Red Sea especially the straight uh to uh sort of disrupt uh the global supply chain they say that they’re targeting

Mostly uh Israeli linked ships but uh other countries in the world are saying that increasingly uh there is no longer any link with Israel and they’re simply targeting whatever ship uh comes through and what is important is that this latest attack which is the largest one

Comes a week after about a dozen Nations led by the United States put out a joint statement really condemning the hooti strikes and telling them uh and warning them of the consequences if they did not stop these strikes that said so far it hasn’t changed what the hoochies are

Doing and we haven’t seen really a sort of retaliation from uh these nations you’re seeing the United States or the UK shooting down missiles but there’s no offensive reaction retaliation against directly uh the hooes you mentioned that the resolution at the United Nation Security Council that resolution is

Expected to do sort of the same condemn and warn but there is debate over the resolution language when it comes to recognizing the right of each individual country to sort of uh react and defend and use whatever means they want to defend their own ships and the reason

For that is that no one wants to see an escalation there and especially they’re worried about what it would mean to have an actual us retaliation what it would mean for security in the Red Sea what it would mean for the very fragile ceasefire in Yemen and of course the

Possibility that that could bring in Iran really more into this conflict than it already is right and this is as there is this new us-led Coalition that is supposed to be protecting the Red Sea but given all the attacks that we’ve seen it doesn’t really seem to be

Working yes the when they presented this operation called operation Prosperity Guardian the US boasted that there were about 20 countries that were joining this Coalition and uh yes we’ve seen several countries including uh most notably the UK participating uh the Greeks and the Sri Lankans have announced just recently that they were

Going to add a warship to this Coalition uh but when you look deep inside between those who said they were participating and since then have sort of distanced themselves those who don’t want to be named but are participating others who have simply decided not to join you’re

Seeing a sort of uneasiness and that uneasiness is most notable when it comes to European countries especially France Italy and Spain who were mentioned in that initial announcement but since then they’ve all sent warships to the Red Sea but they’ve all decided to do that a to

Protect simply their own ships B not under us command so you’re seeing really that the uneasiness comes in joining a us-led Coalition in the Middle East which historically causes a lot of uneasiness B it’s also uh uneasiness about being seen as participating possibly in the escalation if the US

Were uh to retaliate and so you’re seeing all of these countries deciding that yes they agree uh with the US they support the effort to police and protect the Red Sea because it’s protecting the global economy but also at the same time not really wanting to join forces with

Uh the Americans and so this is a very difficult balance that they’re trying to strike how to stop the houthis and protect the global Supply chains while at the same time not angering the region and not contributing to potential escalation okay cathan thank you so much for that cathan gorgani

Yemen’s Houthi rebels fired their largest-ever barrage of drones and missiles targeting shipping in the Red Sea, forcing the United States and British navies to shoot down the projectiles in a major naval engagement, authorities said Wednesday. No damage was immediately reported. The attack by the Iranian-backed Houthis came despite a planned United Nations Security Council vote later Wednesday to potentially condemn and demand an immediate halt to the attacks by the rebels, who say their assaults are aimed at stopping Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

  1. Jai Hinduja. The Houthis ancestor could be the fabulous Queen Sheba. However there is not much enthusiasm among these Operation Co-prosperity partners to invade Yemen because the Houthis do not have much Gold to rob unlike regime changing Gaddafi and Saddam.

  2. UN will vote this Wednesday which will be interesting to see who actually supports the attacks on international shipping , in the meanwhile at some point the Arab Nations should be given the choice of sorting out one of their own , join an international coalition , your just stand aside ! either way at some point the Houthis are going to find out if Iran is really their friend after they get hammered ? big time

  3. Well if course there’s no action from the White House there to weak White House is what started all these problems in the first place Biden crime family is compromised with china

  4. Yemen has finally being noticed. Why do you not talk about Saudi’s pillaging of Yemen? Yemen has nothing left to lose.

  5. Euros trash talking the USA… and these people/ countries are supposed to be our so called friends and allies. The USA should have never gotten involved, because it is not an American problem. The USA/ USN also has no authority to escort ships from other countries. The flag on the back of the ship means a lot. Not a US Flag means not the USA's problem. Countries not in the operation are also not being escorted.

The last ship to get hit was a Maersk (Danish) ship flagged in Singapore carrying cargo from South Korea to Europe. The US Navy responded to the ship's distress call, after it was hit with a ballistic missile. The US Navy destroyer shot down 2 ballistic missiles, then rendered aid and left. Four boats later attacked the ship. It once again made a distress call, so the US Navy sent helicopters, which ended up destroying 3 of the 4 boats. Where were the le French or anyone from the le EU?

The Euros need to take care of their own problems. The USA needs to leave NATO and Europe and the UN.

  6. I'm guessing that this will end up being an early stage of the Zeihan's predicted American withdrawal from being involved in assuring European free trade with China and the middle east. Zeihan frames this as America no longer having a vital interest. But it may work out that it doesn't have the means to intervene in a feasible manner, so it punts.

  7. All these wars around the world are caused by the Civilized Western Europeans and Americans, and yet they blame the Middle Eastern people, who have done nothing to anyone or to the world. Lets face it, they are in Middle East because they want to steal the oil in the name of freedom and democracy.

  8. wouldn be this a job for a journalists to find out whichships exactly were targeted ? everyone can just copy paste official statements – not a big deal

  9. Ppl don't understand, its global economies are protecting. When prices are going up bc of the delay you guys will understand better

  10. Even the French refused to get involved with this obscenity. Hollywood will have to make more movies about Captain America wondering why he went from being everyone's best friend to an aggressive loner. Answer: bought or blackmailed politicians on Capitol Hill.
