  1. **Yeoh said -**

    > “Joy and disappointment, it seems to go hand in hand. There’s not enough nominations to go around. The only take is it’s so competitive out there and there’s no guarantee because you’re not the only voter. It’s widespread.”

    > “You think you get nominated for best picture but not best director? But it happens. And I’m sorry it happened to them because it’s obviously one of the most successful and beloved movies. Look at the box office.”

  2. To be clear, there’s no controversy.

Everyone has *that movie* that didn’t get nominated, and everyone always says “I won’t watch because my movie was snubbed” then we move on.

You don’t see me throwing a hissy fit because *Sisu* was completely ignored. The academy only votes for movies that give them fuck tons of money for consideration, not based on their merits

  3. This gender controversy is ridiculous!

Now, I’m no mathematician, but I did some research and it turns out that a woman has won the “Best Actress” award every year for the last 95 years.

  4. Wasn’t it like 3 years ago the oscars were too white? Now they’re not white enough? They should take Lily Gladstone’s nomination and give it to Margot. Make things right.

  5. Fine let them in. They have to pick who they are replacing tho.

  6. Whats the reason Barbie has two nominees for original song and The Color Purple has none? It has twice or more hits than Barbie

  7. I know that a part of it is that there are only so many nomination spots but my question is why does best picture get 10 nominees and every other category get 5? Who decides on that? I’d think they could have more slots for other categories if they wanted and that would help but just wondering why the discrepancy in general.

  8. Also, when it boils down to it, Barbie isn’t an “Oscar” sort of movie?

It’s bizarre to me how these awards don’t matter… Until they do?

Barbie was such a fun movie. In terms of use of IP, bar none.

I’m not saying it shouldn’t have broken through some barriers and been considered, but it’s just not really a snub.

People need to get the fuck over it.

  9. Why do Barbie fans the director and the actor are entitled to be nominated ?. It’s almost as if they are angry that how dare a white blonde be not nominated when a native finally has

  10. I’d be less weirded out by it if Gosling wasn’t nominated but he was

  11. Why is the box office the argument? Marvel stomped at the box office and none of those movies were best film contenders.

  12. So which woman didn’t deserve to be nominated?

That is what everyone is saying. Someone didn’t deserve it. So who is it???

  13. Disappointed that they wasted the chance to ask her about Lily Gladstone, who will be the 3rd WOC to ever win the best actress category,if she wins.
But no,let’s ask her this stupid question instead.

  14. seeing actual billionaires and millionaires cry over the equivalent of getting a “great job!” sticker is wild

  15. It’s weird how many people are missing the point. No one said Barbie deserves any Oscars or that they are owed. The point was that nominating Ken and not Barbie sends a certain message, even if it was simply because the female category was full. That’s really the end of it.

  16. Let people be mad. I’m still a little mad when I think back on “Boss Baby” getting nominated over completely snubbing “A Silent Voice”.

  17. I feel like the only people who haven’t weighed in on this are Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie themselves

  18. People don’t get nominated for box office smashes all the time. I don’t think Tobey Maguire got any acclaim for Spiderman

  19. It also literally isn’t important at all. They’re movies. Y’all are still rich as fuck and more privileged than the rest of the entire goddamn world.

  20. Barbie and the performances in the movie are severly overrated.

  21. Anyone who knows Oscars knows Barbie was never the kind of movie that was gonna win awards. Get fucking real lol.

  22. She said it well. It’s sad when your favorite doesn’t get nominated, but it’s so competitive some will inevitably get left out. It speaks well for the amount of talent this year.

  23. Don’t they gotta basically gotta lobby themselves to have a shot anyway? Like it’s kinda not an actually even playing field anyway and shouldn’t be considered a reasonably “fair” competition in any meaningful sense? Or am I way off base?

  24. I swear to god this is all Barbie movie advertising. “Hey, in your interview, ask Michelle Yeoh about how Barbie got ‘snubbed'” “Oh, write an article about how Barbie got ‘snubbed’ at the Oscars”. Like, this is the very obvious turning of the wheels of PR machine and everyone is acting like it’s coming from fans. It’s coming from Barbie!

  25. Agree with Michelle, I’m so over this Barbie snub. I don’t care what people say about Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera’s nominations, because come on… they won’t win

  26. Margot Robbie’s snub is sort of interesting. Oscars are almost always awarded for a receipt’s previous work v an acknowledgement of their current show being nominated for. Robbie certainly has previous films she should have won an Oscar for – I, Tonya and Wolf of Wall Street. Her snub for this year’s Oscars is interesting.

  27. So sad that the Very First Movie featuring women in the cast has ZERO Oscar nominations (8)

  28. Asian woman rips white Hollywood’s complete lack of self-awareness with this controversy in the most beautifully Asian way possible.

  29. Honestly, I thought Greta Lee for Past Lives and Natalie Portman for May December were bigger snubs than Margot Robbie for Barbie.

  30. Maybe …. Just maybe the other people that were nominated were considered…… better?

  31. Bro people really mad that a movie about dolls isn’t being given awards? Maybe, just maybe, most people are too old for dolls? Like tf? How many awards did GI Joe win? Did people demand that win awards too?

  32. Rich people mad they didn’t get the attention they think they deserve. I loved Barbie, but who gives a shit

  33. It’s not really a controversy though….. barbie wasn’t even in the top 20 best movies
