Men and women experience marginalisation in different ways, but largely it is only men who turn to violence. Why is that? I am not saying that we need to demonise men because of this. I’m saying that we need to have a complete societal shift to encourage men to express their emotions from a young age and not get caught up in toxic masculinity. To seek help for mental health issues. We need to, somehow, make opportunities available for community involvement, civic pride and education and employment opportunities for men who fall on hard times, or who are born into the generational poverty or welfare trap. Only a bottom up approach can tackle the reasons why people, and I’ll say it here because it’s the truth, largely men, turn to violence in general. Against their community, against other men, against women, against themselves.

I am weaker than 99% of men so I am an easy target. I am scared to walk by myself after dark, I look around when I walk to see if this man has been following me for longer than 10 minutes. Saying “not all men” just invalids that, because it doesn’t mean literally all men are evil, it means that women have ti be careful around all stranger males to avoid getting attacked.

It seems there has been a concerted and intentional effort to focus the justice system primarily around the offenders best interests. Often hear that they’ll only reoffend if imprisoned, it’ll ruin their life etc. Prisons are now filled with life coaches and therapists, all about “rehabilitation”.
Putting the focus on rehabiliting the offender hasn’t worked. Yes rehabilitation is important but it should no longer be the priority.
As far as violent criminals are concerned, if it ruins their life who gives a fuck. If they reoffend lock them up again for longer. Prisons should not be seen as a way to change people. Prisons are a place to put the scum of society so the rest of us can be safer.
Increase prison capacity and increase sentencing. If little Billy reoffends when he gets out throw him back in for longer. Link maximum sentences to previous convictions. 20% increase if you’ve been in before.
It’s not fair to keep creating more victims in an attempt to keep giving criminals more chances.

Every time something like this happens it’s another case of someone who’s “known to the gardai” with dozens of convictions of violent crimes. There’s people walking the streets who have zero business being outside a prison for the rest of their lives.
