HMP Wandsworth: Inmates going weeks without time outdoors in rat-infested prison, report finds

  1. Unfortunately there a lot of people who think prison life should be complete misery as some kind of additional punishment, even if it means more overall crime in the long run.

  2. Wandsworth is another one of those outdated and dilapidated Victorian establishments that should have gone in 2013 with the others. Shepton Mallet and Peterhead went at that time, along with a few others.

Modern prisons like HMP Berwyn and even slightly older ones like Belmarsh (opened 1991) are much more how prisons should be.

  3. It’s worth at all points remembering that people on remand and awaiting trial are sent to Wandsworth prison so those advocating harsh conditions should consider that some of those suffering them will be entirely innocent.

  4. Unfortunately, I had the displeasure of being one of the people on remand being held at Wandsworth.

People have no idea the conditions inside. Rats giving birth in kitchen equipment and “fresh kit” trolleys. When inside, you have no voice aside from if you make friends with a guard who tries helping you out.

They always blame “lack of staffing” to why things are going wrong.

  5. We do nothing to stop recidivism with conditions like this. We need to rehabilitate criminals and not make them feel like they have been abandoned by society. For the handful that are perhaps beyond help, most could be helped with access to education and training, mental health support and treatment for substance abuse. We don’t need to treat criminals like this, we choose to.
