What an interesting play…because surely this is what they want? Although It’s not the “perfect” plan though that Trump wants to do himself a year from now
Republicans have been screeching for Biden to “shut down the border” – Now that they can actually give him the authority to do so, they don’t want to because it might make him look good and then they can’t use the border as a political wedge issue.
It’s party over country for Republicans, every single time.
Republicans: Joe and the Dems just want open borders, and its destroying this country. They aren’t willing to do anything about it.
Joe: If you guys would just pass this bi-partisan bill, I could use my executive powers to close the border as needed on day one.
Republicans: Wait, no not like that. That’s not what we meant.
Why is this hilarious to me?
We live in the dumbest timeline.
A neoliberal lurching hard to the right when they are in danger of losing reelection? Never seen that before.
Old man knows how to play the game! Love it!!
Now Republicans are literally keeping the border open and blaming Biden.
Now they either do it or he can say “see the GOP leadership wants open borders!” 😂
was i the only one still mad that there’s kids in cages in a country that generates 23 trillion dollars a year?
i don’t know why i bothered voting last time. but i guess i’m voting the same this time. because at least they’re not killing me because i hate them. *low bar*. 👎
I saw where WaPo posted this earlier with the quote, this politico article doesn’t reference the direct quote. Or maybe it’s just not showing in reader view?
Dude was elected to office in 1973… 51 years ago… and knows how it all works.
Huh.
It’s beautiful. Now the GOP has to go against the will of their diarrhea-stained messiah and incur his wrath, or Biden gets to hang this around their necks in November. The piss-baby’s posturing is going to wreak havoc on them.
> “This is an opportunity to put laws on the books that someone who is genuinely interested in securing the border will be able to use,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said as the Senate adjourned Thursday. **“President Donald J. Trump in 2017 asked for laws like this. We’re going to deliver it and if he becomes president, he’ll be glad that we did.”**
🙄
I wonder if any if these folks feel dirty about engaging in all this public ass-kissing and sucking up to the worst man in America.
I love when Democrats accomplish Republican legislative goals for them 🙃
As long as the oligarchs who run America need laborers, the border will stay open. It’s a shell game of blame.
Dark Brandon rises.
They don’t care. They want him to use EO to force it. Then they can say he was a communist keeping people out…lol
There it is. Black and white. And he’s not going to lie or backtrack on this. Here you go Republicans, all you need to do is make the deal to get exactly what you want….oh wait, this is just another tantrum and ploy to move the goalposts.
And now you’re going to claim, without a shred of evidence, that Biden is lying.
Biden needs to seriously hurry up and build 62 miles of border wall, just so he can say he built more than Trump’s 52 miles. Most of the money has already been appropriated. This is the only issue the Republicans have left…take control of the issue.
Republican voters don’t care. They don’t care. It’s a fight to the death for them politically and they don’t care about facts.
Everyone’s here like “Joe called their bluff” and I’m like, “shut down the border implies all legal immigration, such as asylum seekers, since that’s largely what Republicans are against, so why are we giving it to them?”
Smart. Illegal immigration is one of the few issues where public support is unequivocally on the Republican side. Whether Republicans follow through with the agreement or not it helps undermine one of their key issues.
Hopefully just in Texas. The rest of us are not using our border as a political stunt. Don’t screw us over.
I’m trying to understand – does this mean that legitimate border crossers would be barred from entering the United States at the southern border? For example, as a Canadian if I went to San Diego and crossed over to Tijuana for a day trip, would I potentially get stuck in Tijuana if a shutdown took effect while I was on the wrong side?
Or what about Mexican citizens possessing a valid visa and passport who regularly cross into the US for work?
The article does specify “between ports of entry” but it also refers to “shutting” the border, which sounds contradictory to me.
Serious question, particularly as the Tijuana trip is one I’ve considered doing on a future visit to California.
Next step: run ads that say “Republicans want open borders”
I thought the border crisis was a Republican myth. What happened?
I do not agree with a border shutdown (especially since I’m pro open border’s).
I thought Trump built a wall and Mexico paid for it. So how is it possible that we still have rapist and murderers coming in to our great country.
If the house refuses to pass this bill, Democrats should constantly and forever refer to the issue as the “Trump Border Crisis”
> “It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.”
So you do pretty much nothing to protect the border for 3 almost 4 years, you put Harris in charge of the border and she also does nothing. Illegal immigration skyrockets…and we’re supposed to grant the President new special “emergency authority” to shut down the border when they see fit?
No, I think our government already has too much unchecked power in their hands, let’s not give it more. How about enforcing the laws already on the books and detain and deport those coming across illegally.
Ehhh, this is too much. It benefits Democrats too much in the long run to shut it down.
However I’m just guessing. In reality a lot of city democrat voters are pissed about it right now so who know.
What do we need to pass this? 6 or 7 GOP votes along with a united Democrat caucus? It would be a huge win for Biden. It would even give him more reason to resolve the Texas border situation like there were children that needed to be escorted to school.
It’s almost like this guy that’s been in government for 50 years knows how to govern.
Is illegal immigration even an issue anywhere besides in Republicans minds? Like, I’ve literally in my 41 years of existence never known a single person affected by illegal immigration other than some hardworking Latino kitchen employees scared of being deported in my entire life. Who the fuck cares besides racists?
Sweet to know that republicans can pressure the Dems to do what they want. How is this a “win”?
All except for the MAGA crowd I don’t think anyone is buying the lie that the Democrats are trying to keep the border open. Not anymore. Especially now that it’s known Republicans voted against a bipartisan bill that would’ve added stricter security to the border.
A lot of Democrats sure seem eager for Biden to implement Trumpian policy.
Such a wild timeline where many people who voted for Biden don’t agree with his border policy due to it being akin to the Republican border policy, meanwhile Republicans are threatening a civil war over there being no border policy, while preventing a closed border because they don’t want the the thing that Dad promised them if Mom is going to give it to them instead
Did the right become woke a day or two ago and decidd they want an open border 🥴
Republicans are panicked because President Biden is poised to implement his secret plan for the border and to protect everyone’s safety and rights completely.
It doesn’t matter. He’s going to reveal everything. In **two weeks**.
