Some context: a few weeks ago, a celebrity party with an “Almost Naked” dress code happened in Moscow. Popular bloggers, pop artists, rappers, and movie stars attended. Which might have been provocative in the 1970s, but today it wouldn’t likely even make the headlines in the US.
The photos leaked from the party onto the internet. We are not sure what happened next, but likely someone reported directly to Putin about it, alongside with the fact that some soldiers complained that “we are not fighting for this”.
Afterward, it became a massive crackdown on the party attendees. Each one of them recorded three-four videos apologizing for how inappropriate that was, how much he/she loves Russia and is a patriot, how he/she is against LGBT, and so on. One rapper got 30 days of arrest time, a movie star had his parts cut out from many upcoming films, and the Russian IRS started checking one of the bloggers for tax evasion. Essentially it was the first crackdown on the celebrity circles – before that, it was kinda “You stay loyal and support Putin,and do whatever you want in your private life”
Essentially, Putin played the “traditional values” card and also distracted the population for a while from the war (as everyone was discussing the party). For some reason, Putin just can’t shut up about LGBT no matter what he is talking about, from war in Ukraine to repairing the ruptured pipes in winter.
