  2. So are you questioning whether he was actually threatened here? IMO It’s totally believable. There has been an intimidation campaign pushed by the hard right of unionism for years against those who are seen as more moderate, and not just on this issue.

  13. He probably is. The challenge is that when you embrace a hard-line, criminal element when it’s politically beneficial to you in the past, it’s difficult to disentangle yourself from it later when it turns against you.

    The DUP is at fracture point imo. Their impasse seems endemic, and it’s hard to see how it can be reconciled currently.

    The best thing for NI Unionism, ironically, would be to finally smash the criminal and thuggish element of their own base; the ‘paramilitary’ gangs. Which, in one scenario, might happen. If the DUP splits, I think a lot of those gangs will lose their political cover, and perhaps some of those controlling our communities will finally find themselves facing some comeuppance.
