*Severance payments of £933,086 were handed out to Tory ministers who resigned during Boris Johnson and Liz Truss’s chaotic time in Downing Street.*
*They include Kwasi Kwarteng, who pocketed nearly £17,000 despite only being chancellor for 40 days, during which his disastrous mini Budget caused economic meltdown.*
*That is on top of the £2.9 million given to special advisers who left their jobs during the same financial year – taking the total spent on the golden goodbyes to a whopping £3.83 million.*
*Anyone under the age of 65 who takes on a ministerial role is entitled to a minimum of three months’ salary when they leave, according to Loss of Office rules dating back to 1991.*
*It even applies to those who have been fired, who resigned or those who have had the whip removed. It does not matter how long they were in the role for.*
*Outgoing ministers can also refuse to accept it.*
Am I the only one who gets the impression that Rishi Sunak is made of rubber? This cabinet would have made for awesome Spitting Image…
With these rewards for failure, why even bother to try to succeed?
disappointing combination of the words ‘severance’ and ‘tory’.
Were it not for the nice paperwork, one might feel tempted to call it embezzlement.
One of the few jobs that pay out well for shit performance
I’m no expert on resignation, but is it normal to be paid severance, considerable amounts of it in fact, when you resign?
Golden parachutes.
I find this kind of thing almost rage inducing.
I can see why the French guillotined a load of people once.
I think this is less a function of ministers receiving severance (which in itself can be reasonable) and more just a byproduct of how utterly dysfunctional successive governments have been.
There is a legal maximum of a little over 100 ministers (which is a significantly larger number than people expect). The churn for those ministers has been huge, with some roles have 10+ new ministers in that role. That’s an utterly absurd rate. Combined with severance, you can see how quickly this numbers scale.
No wonder we get a cabinet reshuffle every 5 minutes, it’s a cash bonanza for these thieves.
You Brits are so ungrateful! These people gave the very best of themself for so long.
The Tories were voted in in 2010, again in 2015, again in 2017 and again in 2019. I mean we have to look to the future and forget the past. OK, allegedly some mistakes were made but let’s be honest here: the conservatives deserve another chance.
Caption implies individual ministers getting seven figure sums. Not the case

A country of muppets run by muppets.
This is what needs to TREND so that their failings are more glaring.
I’ve decided I identify as an outgoing Tory minister
