So it’s probably both unconstitutional and unwieldy, I think they’d exit the state before requiring everybody to identify themselves fully to get an account since most people will not do that. And when the information given to whatever third party gets leaked their stocks could possibly tank.
I don’t use Facebook anymore, but I wouldn’t have given them any serious information back when everybody used it. A social media company does not need proof of my identity or credit or address or anything else.
But Guns are fine…..
Right….
“Parents are also empowered under the measure to bring a cause of action against social media platforms that fail to terminate a minor’s unlawful account.”
This is the crux of it. They want to open up the possibility for a shit ton of lawsuits to be filed by the moms for liberty klans against social
media companies because they can’t control their kids.
I love how the right are proud to be hypocrites.
A school can’t tell my kid to wear a mask but the government can tell my kid they can’t use their phone at home.
You know what? Don’t want you kid on tik tok. Don’t give them a phone. We don’t need the nanny state of Florida tells us what to do, right Ron?
So now Republicans are against parental choice. Got it.
I don’t understand how they think that’s enforceable at all? Like how is the practical application of that supposed to work?
Edit: oh derp, maybe I should have read the article first. That’s about the most wildly ignorant idea I’ve read since they tried measure 114 here in Oregon haha. Good grief. Unenforceable performative nonsense.
Man, the freedom just keeps getting freer!
Republicans passed this so they can ignore young kids telling them they are tired of being murdered at school didn’t they? Can’t hear it so it doesn’t happen per conservative logic
What is the definition of social media here? Does Reddit count? X-Twitter? LTT forum? What about twitch or YouTube? Both have profiles and comments. Are under 16 banned from watching YouTube?
How would that be enforced? In signing up for accounts, the only barrier you face is usually a question. Are you 18? Yes or no. If you are under 18, you would be pretty stupid to answer “no”. Some social media accounts go a step further and ask for your specific birth date. Like you can’t subtract 5 or 10 from the year you were born?
If this law could be effectively enforced, many other laws would need to be shattered to even attempt to enforce it. For example, are LEOs going to walk through schools and search all cell phones to make sure there are no SM apps on them?
I always wonder, when these fascist states impose online rules – like this one perhaps, or no porn, or websites must verify age in order to watch porn, etc… etc… – how exactly do they plan on following through? Apparently they’ve never heard of a vpn solution nor do I see any way they could police this stuff anyway
Does the Bootleg Kremlin not realize that kids can easily fake their age and then change it when they turn 16 when they sign up for social media sites? Hell, I did exactly that when I signed up for my first email account in the early 2000s! I swear, Florida is truly a fucked up place…
There’s zero way this is enforceable. What a stupid waste of time.
Hopefully that will teach them not to vote Republican in a few years
Social media companies should do what Pornhub did in NC and block access for everyone in Florida “just to be safe”. I am sure that would light a fire under some reps asses when their base cant use it either.
At least Florida has all the major issues resolved so they can begin working on things like this.
And how does Bill define “social media”?Vague? Important question if enforceable
The GOP ladies and gentlemen, the party of freedom.
They still mad that TikTok caused young people to vote?
This isn’t about moral panic. Any time a government clamps down on social media, it’s about using moral panic to block a venue of activism. Governments blocked Twitter during the Arab Spring. Iran blocks social media all the time. Florida is taking steps to block social media ahead of the election for similar reasons, and they’re exploiting reactionary simpletons to do it.
Guess the kids will just have to go back to reading books.
What do you mean there are no books?
How is Matt Gaetz going to contact them?
Pass Bills you can’t enforce, Perfect!
The right says a 16 should be able to have a gun.., but its to dangerous for him to tweet
The Puritans were kicked out of England and alive and well in the US.
“The free state of Florida” everybody.
Great. Now do the same thing but raise the age to 75 and make it nationwide
Party of freedoms eh
This just proves that the whole “parental rights” bullshit they peddled for masks in schools and don’t say gay was just that, bullshit.
The worst part is that GOP voters won’t give a shit that they’re hypocrites.
Talk about performative bullshit. “How many more have to die,” a GOO rep asks, as though her party gives the slightest fuck about children dying.
The party of personal freedom and parental choice and personal responsibility and small government strikes again.
How is Matt Gaetz going to find his next boyfriend?
