Thessaloniki is Embarking on a Noticeable Effort to Clear an Abundance of Parked Cars from it’s Urban Core

  1. man, my stay in Thessaloniki or Athens was really bad…i had such a high hopes of these historic cities

  2. Are they building underground parking or what is the strategy here? When I was there it was already hard to find a parking spot. Tbf that was before the metro.

  3. Copied from Barcelona. The assumption is that people are supposed to take the public transport, bike or walk instead of relying on their cars. Some users mentioned, I don’t think it would be financially possible to build underground parking throughout the city to cover all cars.

But it’s really walkable. The sorted garbage infrastructure and introducing green are awesome. urban furniture is a nice thought, one looks inclined. is it meant to be anti homeless? Not sure.

  4. Now take a pic of the other side of the buildings, because that’s where all the cars are now. They have to park them somewhere, so if not on this street then on the next street over.

  5. Ancient parked cars are a huge problem in Greece, you see cars that haven’t moved in decades piling up every square inch of “parking space” (also known as the side of the road). Glad to see change happening

  6. How could this be possible, they are not Copenhagen or the Netherlands?? TELL ME HOW COULD THIS BE POSSIBLE HUH

So impossible, fake news, AI! /s

  7. Thessaloniki is a car centric hellscape that has gotten worse over the years, not better. The proposed solutions are band aid fixes and the metro line that has been under construction for over 15 years will serve only a small part of the city. The amount of cars has increased massively over the years, taking over every available free space for parking. Public transport is notoriously bad and unreliable. You cannot rely on it unless you want to be very early or very late. And if you do you will be stuffed like sardines in can. It’s a system you use because you have to not because you want to.

Another big problem with the city in my opinion is the lack of green spaces. It’s a concrete jungle and during the summer it gets HOT. There are no parks full of trees to go to and relax. The little green spaces there are are also either abandoned or in disrepair.

I know I sound salty but I live here and unfortunately I don’t see the situation improving.
