Men and boys need to face the “epidemic of violence” against women, says Tánaiste

  1. “Men and boys I think in particular, have a responsibility to start to have that conversation among ourselves about the kinds of factors, the kinds of attitudes that give rise to the view to feelings that engender men to commit acts of violence against women.”

He continued: “I am devastated by the events that happened. I would hope that by shining a light on gender-based violence might help us to have this discussion as a society.”

Not much wrong with that statement. Good to see a common appeal across all political parties on this issue.

Funny there’s a majority on here refusing to acknowledge there’s a clear problem of gender based violence/abuse against women – and that’s not just murder.

Remember, he’s not saying other forms of violence don’t matter and he’s not saying it’s *your* fault someone was murdered.

  2. No. No they don’t.

What we need is less lenient prison sentences to serve as an actual deterrent against violence against people.

  3. I’d hope to see a bit more from Varadkar than this type of statement. He knows first hand what it’s like to be harassed by strangers, in person and online. He probably knows how it feels to feel unsure about going out for a walk, just in case he comes across some looper. And that’s all with the advantage of having some element of Garda protection, as well as being a big enough fella himself.

He’s in a position of leadership and power where he can actually have a material, tangible impact on issues around public safety, beyond ‘men and boys should talk to one another about these issues’. This statement comes off as lip service.

  4. What feckin conversation should men and boys be having Leo? “Would ye do me a favour and not rape or kill any women?”

    The reality is two fold:

    1. There’s about 15-25% of __people__ who will become abusive in some way. For 75%+ of people we don’t need to worry

    2. The 15-25% we do need to worry about won’t be affected by a few chats and educational campaigns. The only real thing that will change their actions is punishment, not rehabilitation, punishment. They need a deterrent to not behave badly.

And Leo is there a reason you aren’t also talking about the psychological abuse women subject men too? Oh ye, it’s not news worthy, and just like the abuse against women it needs a deterrent, not education.

  5. 99% of men and boys are good, decent people. Everyone should be deeply offended by this headline that insinuates otherwise.

The proper response, to the 1% of violent people in society, is firm and consistent action by the police and judicial system. If someone commits an assault, then they should go to jail.

  6. Every man I know protects and cares deeply about the women and girls in their lives, be they wives, girlfriends, daughters, sisters, mother’s etc.

What conversation am I not having?

Why are we now being made to feel guilty on behalf of psychopaths?

  7. We need to set up a Guantanamo bay style prison and start arresting aggressive looking men…. It’s the only way that we will get any real answers

  8. Weren’t people on this sub complaining a couple of days ago that no one is saying “not all men” in response to the murder? Now look at the comments on the recent posts regarding it…

  9. The cognitive dissonance amazes me on Reddit and elsewhere. Yesterday there was a thread with 3000 upvotes about the Romanian suspect being letting go, condemning the ‘prejudice’ against immigrants. Yet we have our very own Tanaiste, Taoiseach, ROSA et.al. claiming that this was a result of male violence; as if the person was killed just because she was a woman.

Prejudice is prejudice, no matter who it is against. How many murders in 2021? How many of the victims were men? I guarantee it was most the vast majority of them. How many of them had virtue signalling vigils all across the world?

**Be prejudiced all you like, but the hypocrisy & cognitive dissonance irritates the shit out me.**

  10. Worrying response in this thread. It might not be all men but if you’re feeling attacked or blamed in the last few days, you’re probably one of the men being called out.

  11. Men are more likely to be violent , there’s no doubt about that. That said I’m not sure there is much sense to this statement. Men who are abusive and dangerous aren’t going to change their behaviour because of his statement.
