MP asks whether it would be possible to ‘suspend devolution’ to avoid Covid ‘confusion’

  1. An MP who is a sex pest and is only still an MP because of a loophole in the rules that meant he couldn’t be subject to a recall petition.

  2. That sounds like a slippery slope.

Why don’t we just suspend “confusing” local government and have Tory rule for everyone‽

  3. As someone who has to live with devolution (I’m in Wales) he’s 100% correct. Sturgeon and Dripford have proven that devolution doesn’t work.

  4. My local MP, useless potato-looking sex pest.

Currently trying to ingratiate himself with the party.

His career is going to be short-lived, he only got in on the get Brexit done wave. His sex antics etc are well known in the constituency now. He also voted against free school meals which upset people. He’s out at the next election and the area will turn red again.

  5. As much as this individual is a knobule, the idea that all three countries on Great Britain, where there are no borders and many people cross the border for work etc, have a unified policy on testing, isolation periods etc is actually pretty sensible.

The problem is it would essentially be Westminster led and they’re at best useless and at worst actively harmful to Covid management.

  6. He must’ve inherited some awful genes from the people willing to call their child Rob Roberts. Are his parents cousins or siblings?

  7. I’ve always felt less enthused by devolution than Labour tbh. Suspending it wouldn’t go down well but I do wish we all had the same covid rules as Westminster given they’re our main government, and given they’re more likely to ease than prolong restrictions.

Edit – this is Rob Roberts, fuck him. The sentiment of his comment here is understandable though.

  8. I have always said too much has been devolved.

This travel corridors and “self isolate if you return to Northern Ireland from Corsica after 8am on Sunday” gubbins is basically a border control matter. Borders have always been reserved and always should be; it’s not like Scotland is immune to the variant swirling in Barcelona but has a 100% IFR to the variant English folks brought back from the Algarve – and vice versa.

This is absurd. You just know when this is all eventually repealed that the devolved governments will scramble to keep it on the books forever (like, you know, I predicted and was slagged off for) or will start hissing like angry cats at a “Tory power grab”.

The pandemic is a *national* crisis and the nuts-and-bolts should be handled at UK level.

  9. This reads to me as “Scotland, Wales and NI are doing the right thing and making us look bad so can we force them to do it out way so it doesn’t make us look bad anymore?”

  10. Idiot. Tbh I can’t stand our current form of devolution I hate this half half form of devolution.

Just devolve the whole country and each region has the exact same responsibilities for the most part with some the rest reserved for the federal government.

  11. There’s been restrictions in Scotland, Wales and Ireland for a while now, and none in England, and the numbers show there isn’t any real difference between them, so maybe time to admit restrictions are pointless and let people make the country function.

  12. this cunt should have been dropped like a stone when the sexual harassment shit came out. But now calling to suspend devolution when representing a welsh constituency?

It’s almost like he’s trying to deliberately destroy his career as an MP

  13. I know it’s controversial, but I actually don’t think there’s inherently wrong with suspending devolution for the purpose of a coordinated response during a crisis. At least in theory.

The problem as always is the government in Westminster at the moment is both controversial and useless (and many other things not entirely pandemic related) so it would be unlikely to have better results. It’s certainly true that we’ve had a lot of times where it’s felt like the various governments are using the pandemic response to posture against each other and hasn’t helped deal with the issue.

  14. I was at the 2019 election for the count of Delyn (and my own at-the-time Alyn and Deeside) and I’m still wondering how the fuck did he beat David Hanson.

  15. It only seems to confuse a subset of Little Englanders who seem to be unaware that devolution even exists and that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland do not have to say “How high?” when we say “Jump!” It has been the case throughout the pandemic that measures have been devolved and you would have to have had your head buried in the sand for the last two years to not know this.

  16. as much as i think scotland and wales are going way overboard with their covid bollocks, this is a bit of a slippery slope and i think the regions should be able to decide what they want to do for themselves. if their governments are being overreaching nanny states, that’s a problem for their constituents to solve by voting in someone less insane and not for westminster to dictate
