  1. “Minister of Justice decides to actually do their job”

I think the penny has finally dropped with the Government on how silly things are and how unsustainable it is for communities. It’s worrying that it’s takes some protests to draw their attention to the issues. Business closure numbers in the likes of Killarney are speaking for themselves.

  2. For the love of God.. between this one and o Gorman..How in God’s name are these people leading the country?..

  3. I believe she’s also planning a walk along the border and in immigration in the airport for photos.

  4. She’s possibly one of the worst Ministers For Justice that there have been in my lifetime.

  5. They need to use a bit of fucking common sense fast.   I checked the census for 2016, 20% weren’t born in ireland and there was zero agitation by anti-immigrant people.

Most of the protests are the natural response to a situation that is totally out of control

  6. She’s such a gobshite. Between herself and o’gorman , they are about as useful as an accordion on a deer hunt

  7. Just imagine if she was the minister of finance….

  8. A government run by polls and headline outrage. Were a laughing stock

  9. It’s not enough to preserve the natural FG base. I predict growth of SF but also a more fractured series of elections with a decline in electoral trust so SF popularity might be a blip.

  10. The local elections are coming up soon and the government parties will not farewell as things stand. So they have to be seen to be acting tough on immigration, even though in reality the back room deals to allow it to happen have already been made and high-ranking international bureaucrats/NGO heads are writing our migration policies.

In reality, this country needs to forcibly deport failed asylum seekers and refusing to except applications from people who arrive here illegally.

  11. This is pitiful from Government and is just populist bullshit feeding the frenzy. It is giving legitimacy to far right lunatics.

    This is spineless stuff

  12. There were something like 32 asylum applications from the USA last year.

  13. If the ‘far right’ protests weren’t happening and getting people talking and media attention, she could have ignored this forever. Opinion polls haven’t really changed regarding illegal immigration since the Syrian crisis but the silent majority can be ignored.

  14. Around 40% will continue to vote for this govt despite these announcements being utterly ridiculous. They’re doing well in the economy and as Peter McVerry said, to the govt we’re an economy not a country.

  15. It’s not a border control crackdown. It’s simply an accelerated asylum procedure.

If you arrive without documents and say the magic words ‘I want to claim asylum’, you’ll still be handed a letter and told to turn up at the IPO. You might be given a taxi or garda lift to Balseskin.

  16. So the government on the one hand say immigration is fine/working correctly and then on the other they’re making changes like this?

  17. “McEntee also said that she will consider increasing fines for airlines if passengers arrive in Ireland without passports or official documents”

Is there any evidence of these fines ever being handed out?

  18. We just need to make it so only those who contribute to the economy can claim social welfare payments, or those whose parents have contributed or been legal residents for 16 years.

Ireland is tiny, you don’t pass through 50 countries to get to Ireland to feel safe, you do it to get the free stuff you wont get in France, Italy, Hungary or Romania.

Have two payments “Legal entrant” and “Illegal entrant” for people who arrive and overstay or illegally arrive. One can be just pay them with food, trust me, its more than you would get abroad, the other can be a slightly more and can include accommodation while being processed.

Lastly, we have to accept that some of these countries are now as safe as Ireland is. For example you might be forced to go through female genital mutilation in Ireland. You might be forced by a community in Ireland to cover up your hair, or not work, or not drive a car. We accepted people who said they were fleeing this stuff only for some of them to start the practices here. That means they are now, no longer safer to come here as they wont be escaping it. So “Safe” needs to show, that actually what you are fleeing could happen here.

  19. The laws are already there they’re just not enforced.
