  1. They forgot the “other people have solar panels fee” and im sure they will be added a “Its not green energy fee” soon

  2. Considering that your energy is processed by transmission system operators, distribution grid operators and suppliers (plus some overhead, such as the regulators), you can’t really expect the breakdown of your energy costs to look any different. If there would simply be 1 fee without details, the complaint would be that they’re not being transparent enough.

Now if the conversation is about the fact that these companies (especially the DGOs) are charging far too much, then yes, that complaint is absolutely valid. Energy is one of the most important markets we have, and our government has been turning it into an unaffordable clusterfuck for decades.

  4. 80%* of my water and waste bills are fixed costs.

I don’t try to waste too much water and energy and don’t like producing more waste then necessary out of environmental reasons. I have to confess though that I do take longer showers after I saw that I’m literally saving two euros a year by showering quicker.

*Edit: I’m looking up some numbers for last year. 26yo man living alone in a small, well isolated, South faced apartment.

Waste: cost for 8 months in 2021, total of €61.82 from which €57.50 is fixed cost (rent of container, service,…). 93%! If there numbers are correct, I produce 10% of what they expect from someone in my situation which seems absolutely ridiculous.
It would literally be cheaper to stop buying blue bags and rent my green container and instead dump everything as ‘rest’. But I’m raised as a ‘sorter’ and ‘recycler’ so I won’t 😉

Water: full year, total of €219.72 from which €99.68 fixed cost. 45%, ok not as bad as I thought. The frustration I remember was probably from looking only at the cost of water itself. If you look at sewage costs, taxes,… which are also counted per m³, I could probably save a bit more.

Gas: full year variable (very low) cost, total of €24.82 of which €14.89 is fixed cost. 60%. This fixed cost is every that is not counter per kWh. So taxes etc I count as a variable cost I could lower by using less. Btw, I know €24 this is extremely low but my heating works about 6 full weeks a year I think. (and €100 ‘groepskorting’) If it freezes outside, but the sun is out, my apartment is 24°.

Electricity: full year, total €149.48 from which €72.42 is fixed. 48%, again counting taxes, green energy costs,… as variable cost since they are calculated per kWh. (again €100 ‘groepskorting’) If I wanted to save extra money, this would be where I would look.

Total (waste extrapolated to full year): €468.75 for September 2020 – September 2021 of which €273.41 is fixed costs. 58.29%. Leaving me 40% I can work with and significantly lower my comfort to save a not really meaningful amount of money. Say €100/year.

I do understand that saying that that’s not a meaningful amount to me shows that it’s not the money itself I have a problem with. My problem is that if you want people to recycle and think about their waste for example, it would help if doing that actually showed on their bill because sadly, that’s the motivation many people need.

I am going to have to save this text somewhere because it’s actually useful information for me 😀

  5. I cannot relate. My Electrabel invoice is small – € 40 per month for gas and electricity:

    **Gas**

I am fortunate that the place where I rent is well insulated so the central heating rarely goes on. If it is cold, I wrap up in the wool items that I bought in Spullenhelp for a few euro.

I have very short showers and not too hot so the boiler is not fired up as long. Perhaps because I was in the reserve miliary for some months when in university.

    **Electricity**

I am very conscious and buy A-rated goods and have all energy-saving LED bulbs.

  6. Can’t relate.
Solar panels and heat pump made the power company beg.
“Sir, please sir, pay us something… We are still usefull to you…”
When the digitale meter is obligated we slap a big battery on the wall and that will be it.

  7. You forget the best excuse: If you use 0 energy, you have to pay 0.

But how can we use 0 energy in modern life?

But again the same answer, why do you need modern life?

    – Why do you like to eat a tomato in the winter?

    – Why don’t you wear layers of clothes in the winter?

    – Why do you need a wash/dish washer if you can do it by hand?

Fun part is, most of the Groenen/Ecolo use Apple products to make their statement.
