The topic of gas stoves ignited a heated debate last year when a Biden appointee [suggested they could be banned](https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/01/26/meet-man-who-unwittingly-triggered-war-over-gas-stoves/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2) because they posed a risk to human health.

But a ban isn’t in the works — and this week the administration will finalize a scaled-back plan to make new stoves less energy-intensive.

The Energy Department will finalize modest energy-efficiency requirements for gas and electric stoves and ovens as soon as Tuesday, according to four people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the rules are not yet public. The move, part of a broader [effort to curb planet-warming emissions from household appliances](https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2022/01/09/energy-efficiency-climate-change-biden/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5), could prompt political backlash even though it reflects a compromise with U.S. manufacturers.

The rules would not affect the stoves in people’s kitchens or those currently on the market, according to the three people. They would not instruct American families “how to cook their dinner,” as Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) [put it](https://x.com/Sen_JoeManchin/status/1612903995605147649?s=20) last year.

  2. GACK…..

This headline fails basic rhetoric, unless it was written by a WashPO editor who is a stealth proponent of the gas industry. NEVER repeat the BS message when refuting the BS message. For example, if you say “This is Wikipedia” it is dumb for me to rebut you saying “No, this is not Wikipedia.”

    Quick.. name a website.

Nearly everyone in the first nanosecond will think “Wikipedia”. In attempting to rebut BS by *repeating* the BS, even with words like ‘no’ or ‘not’, the audience simply hears the BS multiple times. Instead, rebut me by saying, “Wake up buddy, this is the amazingly awesome REDDIT! Yah REDDIT!”

Activists interested in upping their message-framing game might want to follow linguist George Lakoff. Joe Romm has a good book too, “Language Intelligence”.
