These types of gardens are ecological nightmares btw
The good old days
Now everyone has plastic grass
It’s a real bug bear of mine. People can have drives and greenery. Instead they just concrete the whole thing.
We had one like this when I was a child, last one on our street but sadly my dad had it bricked over as a driveway
Often driveways that aren’t big enough and the car sticks out and block’s half the pavement.
Most people are too overworked now to have front gardens like this
The fact so many gardens have been over over, contributes to the issue when we have a lot of rain, instead of soaking into the ground, it runs away into sewer systems not designed for it, and we end up with flash floods in large cities and towns when we never used to.
Are you seriously suggesting every house in England no longer has a nice garden?
Now a days people don’t have the cash or time to make front gardens look like this,
Cars happened. Notice how the street isn’t full of cars either.
Ooo remembers corned beef and bread you cut with a knife?
Back when people could afford to buy their home while also having enough time not at work to be able to maintain a garden.
The issue is the growth of the number of cars per household. Most of these gardens are now driveways as a lot of homes have more than one car.
Also I think it’s time. We’re more busy nowadays, both parents often work which means your free time is precious. Back in those days it was fairly common for one parent to stay at home to tend to the house and kids. So in their free time they also made great effort with the gardens.
It’s like we’ve gone backwards as a species.
Immigrants don’t like gardening
The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God’s heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth
