Obviously. Tory. This is what they do. If you don’t like it, don’t vote for them.
The Lords is a fundamentally corrupt entity, it’s bizarre to me that it’s tolerated by otherwise sane Brits.
Let’s have a second House of Parliament that almost entirely consists of as many mates of the PM and party donors as they want, plus some bishops and some literal aristocrats! What could possibly go wrong.
Oh, how unusual…. that sort of thing only happens in the colonies
Basically almost every Tory Lord and MP are corrupt, it is the whole point of the Tory Party nowadays, take money from the state and put it in the pockets of your friends and donors, rinse & repeat.
After a quick search of other headlines in recent hours, it seems to show that the public only seem to care if she made a racist statement or not.
Obviously, potential corruption is swept under the rug. No wonder the NHS is struggling to stay afloat after multiple dodgy deals during covid and funds being siphoned off to the powerful. It’s being brought to its knees in order to privatise it. The people doing it are already running the show.
If this happened in a third world country we would be calling it corruption, graft, nepotism etc and demanding the overthrow of the government.
This is how our country operates now. This government is corrupt to the core. Tories work for nobody but Tories.
I’d be surprised if it turns out ANYONE who was involved with PPE company referrals weren’t getting kickbacks in some form. Easy money, tbh.
And absolute shithead behaviour.
We not only kept our banana’s bent, but also our MP’s.
Shitshow
She’s a well known cunt. I’m not sure why anyone should be surprised.
I think she’s also under investigation for telling an asian man he was a waste of a white man’s skin.
So, she is now going to be arrested under corruption charges, yes? Yes? Yes….?
Husband an Isle of Man based financier. Honestly I don’t want to shit on the IoM but ‘I’m registered there for…..business reasons and such…’, it’s so fucking transparent. Shut down British tax havens!
Does anyone remember her and her husbands crypto scheme? She is a feckless robbing cuuuuuunnnnt.
Does anyone actually believe *any* government contracts go to anyone who is *not* a friend/doner/crony?
I just assumed, under the Tories, they *all* are – isn’t that the whole point of their company…sorry, “political party”?
It is going to be very hard for this country to take political leaders and laws seriously after this. I really am concerned that if high level criminal behaviour isn’t dealt with resulting in long prison sentences and repossessions… Then, as the Laws aren’t upheld, some unstable citizens may get violent and and take matters into their own hands. That is not good.
Likewise people will turn to crime a lot quicker as it clearly does not matter. And I worry about what sort of despotic dictatorship will happen here as the foundation has been laid.
Conflict of interest amongst the Tories….
…must be a weekday ending in a Y.
inb4 cuntservatives barge in and tell us the PPE contracts were handled fairly and to the nation’s best interest. Fucking disgusting clowns.
I didn’t live through the 80s in England, but based on everything I’ve read about excess and greed masking itself as ambition, I feel like that’s what we’re seeing now.
It’s not even like the Tory’s govern well. They basically get in, promise a lot, and then lift everything that’s not nailed down.
Why are so many people still tory? They want to be taken for mugs? Think it will allow them to be thiefs too? I don’t get it. Is it just contrarianism to stick it to the left? I don’t even think that makes sense because I’m sure there’s right wing peoole that hate corruption too.
Is there any point in being honest in Britain anymore?
Why is this a news? Are they going to report “water is wet” tomorrow?
Fuck all there really and we’ll probably get, at most, some filleted small company accounts that will reveal also fuck all in April. I’m not an expert in these things so somebody correct me if I’m barking up the wrong tree here but I’m guessing;
– PPE Medpro itself is basically just a vehicle to pass through money and goods;
– it will have less than whatever the magic number of employees is (50?) and the balance sheet will be less than £5m (?? Again can’t remember the exact number) at year end (presumably because all the stock will have been moved on, cash collected and paid on) so they will only have to file abbreviated accounts (i.e. balance sheet and some notes but, crucially, not a profit and loss account showing what the company turnover was);
– the financing from this “financial consortium” presumably was done via some sort of debt financing as opposed to a shareholding and Barrowman and Mone are probably several steps removed from the consortium via some sort of labyrinthine holding company structure;
– whoever Anthony Page is (company director, secretary and sole shareholder per Companies House link above) is far enough removed from Mone and Barrowman or “the consortium” not to count as a related party (if they’re not a wholly owned subsidiary, which would really give the game away, companies have to disclose related party transactions i.e. those with parties who may be able to influence both ends of a transaction);
– all communications with Barrowman and Mone was done via WhatsApp (which is encrypted and Facebook, as far as I know, doesn’t have to hand over the keys) probably using a burner phone number that isn’t attributable to anyone so any leaked messages can’t be *proven* to be from or too a particular person;
– again using small company exemptions PPE Medpro will be exempt from audit so, short of a criminal investigation or a whistle-blower there’s very little chance of finding out who they did business with.
And that’s it. Mone will brazen it out and waltz off with a share of £40m.
I’m assuming she was basically able to repurpose her underwear company to make this stuff? You’d like to think that part of the referral to the “VIP lane” would include some sort of credible prospectus on where they were intending to get this stuff and the credentials of the people making it. I’d suggest that’d be a fruitful line of enquiry (even if it’s just a case of pointing out that they were basically buying this stuff on spec without any sort of checks).
The other thing that’d be interesting is to understand fully what the parliamentary standards committee (or whatever the equivalent is for the house of lords) deems to be a financial interest. There’s an accounting principle called “substance over form” which is basically the idea that it’s the reality of the transaction that counts more than the technicalities of it. You’d think something similar would apply with a register of interests for something like this; regardless of whether she technically owns the company, if she’s being paid a 7 figure sum by a company she recommended for the contract I think that should count as a financial interest. How you ho about proving that without;
Either someone with a genuine smoking gun (not a WhatsApp message) blowing the whistle or
The government amending small companies exemptions for those involved in ppe contracts with the dhsc or other public bodies
Is beyond me though.
The other question that always seems to get overlooked here is did we get value for money? If we got gowns and masks of the right standard in a timely fashion (ie no lives were lost waiting for them to get up to speed when we could have bought from other suppliers or because the ppe was unusable) for a half decent price, I can’t of don’t really care. It’s *grubby* but OK(ish).
The lengths these people are going to to hide their involvement though suggests there’s something to be ashamed of. After all, couldn’t Michelle Mone, in the spirit of transparency, have just declared her involvement from the start and said she genuinely believed the company could help but wanted it all above board? The only reason for skulking around is if you have something to hide. Feels like the government have just hidden behind the excuse of desperation to justify paying exorbitant amounts and allowing cronies to fill their boots. 25m gowns at £125m is £5 a pop. Doesn’t feel like much of an economy of scale from the “party of fiscal responsibility” that’s supposed to understand business.
Either way, I just hope the Good Law project, the Public Accounts Committee and the public at large don’t let this drop till we find out the truth about these contracts.
At what point does it become easier to report the Tories without corruption scandal?
At this point isn’t the Tory party basically just a criminal organisation to funnel government money into their/their mates’ pockets?
The corruption and cronyism is off the charts, fresh scandal every week without fail.
Well there’s a shocker …not. I’d be more surprised if a tory mp or peer was discovered NOT to be lining their own pocket
They started a company to take the contract. Total cash in.
