The “senior” DUP executive member behind leaking the speech made by party leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson was wearing a wire, the BBC understands.

The member used the recording device to relay the speech live to loyalist activist Jamie Bryson.

Mr Bryson then posted what Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said on X, formally Twitter.

It is understood the party leadership believed the speech was being leaked via a mobile phone and called for all phones to be switched off.

But the live feed continued to be posted on X.

Mr Bryson refused to disclose who leaked the speech, but told the BBC’s Good Morning Ulster programme it was a “senior” member of the party.

“Senior people in the DUP felt so exercised about this and felt that this was such a defining moment, that they took the step that they did,” Mr Bryson said.

“Obviously I wasn’t in the room, the venue clearly wasn’t bugged by some hidden device so there was clearly senior people – plural – within the DUP who felt so strongly about this that they took this extraordinary, unprecedented step.”

Immediately after the five-hour private meeting on Monday night, Sir Jeffrey said he was disappointed that a member of the DUP executive had “betrayed” the party.

He also disputed some of what was posted on Mr Bryson’s X account, insisting it was inaccurate.

On Tuesday morning, the DUP leader said there would be an investigation into how parts of the meeting were leaked.

  1. We were joking about this but it seems it was actually happening! Makes sense anyhow, considering how quickly the information was being leaked.

  2. Wearing a wire? meaning now day’s recording audio on a phone ffs

  3. >X, formally Twitter.

Does any of this shite ever go past the eyes of a sub-editor?

  4. Lol this sub are going to take some miles out of this story….!  Wee bryson be loving all this attention.

” DUP felt so exercised about this ”

Exercised? They were being chased around the room Benny Hill style?

The whole thing is a farce so i wouldnt be suprised!

  6. What I dont get is his tweets while funny to read were not getting many likes or retweets. There was only handful of protesters too at the venue. I dont understand how he has so much power and influence withing the DUP/Unionism as a whole when it seems like its a very small minority who support him and his views

  7. At a guess, probably Sammy Wilson’s the leak, what a jack ass

  8. Is that not committing some sort of crime? Both by the person wearing the wire and by Bryson broadcasting it. That’s really devious and underhanded.

  9. Wouldn’t it be funny though if they outed the mole and took them to the cleaners, then this great legal mind got done too?

  10. You mean he had his phone on ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

  11. Is this like, *literally* a crime?

Not to say that wouldn’t be par for the course for the DUP, but it’s just interesting to openly admitthat.

  12. Whoever wore that ‘wire’ really hates the people striking for a fair pay, they’re happy to keep getting paid but their constituents and voters they hold in contempt, detestable.

  13. Why did the senior dup member do this? Surely it will come out eventually who did it and then they’ll be fucked

  14. God love him he thinks he’s someone important, get in the bin

  15. I am angrier at Strawberry not livestreaming it here. Don’t we matter to you anymore?

  16. So Paisley wore a wire then, i thought he was wearing bryson, been inside him often enough
