>Federal law allows an American president to declare military systems surplus to need, assign them a value—potentially zero dollars—and give them away on the condition that the recipient transport them.
This is why the excuse “We are running out of funds for Ukraine” is so unconvincing. Biden could, if he really wanted.
I’m all for arming Ukraine, any which way we can.
Based Biden
I just hope it won’t be stopped like when protestants tried it.
I’m all for helping Ukraine but there is a lot involved. We cannot sacrifice our national security for a foreign country.
That being said, I’m hoping this drives a reformation in our military spending and puts more emphasis on our highlighted shortfalls (manufacturing capabilities).
Ehh what’s stopping Biden from just giving these arms directly to Ukraine?
Just to clarify a few things I see a lot. Biden cannot declare whatever he wants “surplus” and send it to Ukraine. There are complicated procedures and metrics that go into determining if something is surplus or not. Biden can then decide who gets it and for how much. He can’t just, for instance, declare b-52’s surplus and give them to Ukraine.
Biden does not *control* the DoD he *commands* it. It seems like a small distinction but it is not. Congress controls most of the actual management of the Military, that’s why the defense committees in both the senate and the house are such powerful and coveted spots.
Greece is a NATO ally. There are laws that make it easier to transfer equipment to them because of that. Biden might want to give everything to Ukraine but he still has to follow the laws and there are a lot of laws around selling/giving weapons to other countries
Ammo and spare parts are expensive and not freely available. Right now that’s mostly what Ukraine needs.
Go for it POTUS. You have my blessing.
I’m sure Turkey likes this.
Surprised he didn’t go for this via Ireland, what with there being more people who identify as Irish in the US electorate than live in Ireland.
I guess it might be a bit controversial if Northern Ireland gets overrun with Abrahms, Bradleys and himars….
