So my gym is upping their fees and rather than being forthcoming about it, they’re telling customers they’ve been upgraded. I’d have no problem paying if they just came out and said the cost of providing the service has increased but I find this so sneaky and annoying. Am I overreacting?

  1. Surely that’s misleading. If they clearly say “the same” services yet claim it’s an upgrade. An upgrade denotes an improvement to a service or better service

  2. Provided the improvements they’re making are happening and the money they’re asking for is justified I don’t see anything wrong with it..

Edit: but yes the phrasing is weasely

  3. Id leave out of principal alone.

As you say, this is sneaky as hell.

Also, call me crazy but I cant justify paying €660 annually (55 per month) for ANY gym.

As someone who used to live at the gym I decided to create my own set up at home due to Covid.

Pricey enough upfront cost but you’ll be saving hundreds within a year or so and I can’t see myself ever going back.

All you need really is a small amount of space and (depending on your goals) a budget of a few hundred quid on gear and weights.

Not too mention , you’ll avoid having to put up with roided up braws hoggin the equipment to get their pump on.

Not to mention , you’ll avoid the Rona from any of said roided up braws.

How? They’ve told you “your membership will now increase”. What else do you want?

  5. Lucky you, mine went from 60 euro to 90 this year to try and pay off some of the debts incurred during lockdowns being closed for almost 2 years, and that’s a gym that runs non profit.

  6. Some questions

    1. What do their terms and conditions say about price increases?
    2. Is there a minimum commitment (like 12 months) for the membership? Are you still within that minimum commitment period? It’ll be harder for them increase the price if you’re, for example, 6 months into a 12 month contract without it called out in the terms

  7. Yeah, it’s really poorly worded and confusing. They’re tripping over themselves informing you of and trying to sell you an upgrade all the while upping your membership fee and trying to not piss you off.

  8. You’re getting robbed to bits lad! €55 smackers a month for a gym membership?!?!? Holy fuck…

  9. “you are upgraded so you can enjoy the same stuff you had before” is not the good wording they think it is oö

  10. To be fair OP I think I go to the same gym and they have done a fair bit of work. They used to have a pool right?

Got the same email and the only thing you can do here is either leave or pay the increase. The email is the months notice they were legally obliged to provide.

  11. Sneaky? No, this is typical American sales bullshite, gyms and coffee shops are well versed in it.
And the copy the most successful sales tactics from successful gyms in the USA.
