Assaulting a gay couple while throwing homophobic slurs at them would seem to be a very obvious hate crime. And, under the proposed Hate Crime bill, harsher sentences could be applied in those circumstances going forward.
I wonder what _actual_ impact that would have on sentencing though?
A regular theme we see on here is people lamenting the amount of suspended sentences handed out, rather than harsher sentences. Would such measures actually see stronger sentences in cases like this, or would it be an option that gets ignored in favour of the same punishment as before?

Someone with no prior convictions receives a suspended sentence, and in addition gets his name published in the papers. This is no doubt going to hang over him the rest of his life. Prison would serve virtually no purpose bar taking up a space going to someone much more deserving.
It’s completely appropriate given the circumstances. Should this fella have been hanged, drawn and quartered instead or something?
