Victory in climate race ‘still possible’ even if 1.5°C hits this decade

  1. Well, we’re basically at 1.5C. But that doesn’t mean we should stop decarbonizing. What it does mean as we better increase albedo like right now to buy ourselves a bit of time.

  2. “Victory” is the wrong word. It is tragedy already. Lots of irreversible damage (species, ecosystems, famines). Climate change is not a light switch. It’s not “win or lose”. That’s the mentality that creates doomers. They see loss and believe it’s over. No, it’s a dimmer. A dimmer of increasing loss. It can get much, much worse than what’s already locked in. That’s why we fight. We are doing better than expected, but way worse than we hoped. So keep it up. Join an environmental political organization if you haven’t already. Most aren’t too demanding.

  3. What “Victory?” We are at a stage right now where the damage inflicted would last an estimated 500-1000 years provided we halted all production *now,* fossil fuels and otherwise.

Phrases like this are dangerously misleading. Like it or not, we are facing a minimum of 20 generations of chaos. “Victory,” as a term, is by definition short lived. No human can perceive 20 generations into the future, or even in the past (23&me is not your family tree, btw.)

A headline such as this is akin to hearing an announcer say “Victory for the Cubs is still possible!” when they have a batter up on the bottom of the ninth and are trailing 18-0, and you realize you are listening to a broadcast from 1909.

  4. WW3 would flatten out emissions real fast. Just putting out there in an Every Cloud sort of way.

  5. We passed 1.5 for a good part of last year. We will blow right by it. Species are being lost weekly. And most are dying horrible deaths, being too hot or too dry. I don’t see victory.

  6. So so so incredibly tired of articles like this claiming we’re all good while getting the science totally wrong. We crossed 1.5 degrees last year for some time, we’re basically at that threshold now already and the consequences are devastating.

Are they incompetent? Corrupt? Makes no difference. The result is the same. Misinformation

  7. At this point I’m just hoping we don’t do the full IPCC 8.5 scenario.
