So, this looks similar to Akrotiri (sp?) on Santorini. Hodgepodge placement of buildings. No grid no real planning it seems.
When did humans anywhere on this planet start centralizing cities and utilizing grid/block patterns regularly in city building?
This particular site is an ancient graveyard.
The neighbourhood I spent my earliest childhood is apparently a shithole nowadays.
There are probably 100,000+ locations like this around the world, probably more.
Over time, in most regions, buildings get buried by multiple things.
– Structures themselves collapsing, causing debris
– Natural occurrences including mud slides or soil that picks up and builds up over centuries
– Rising tides
For most sites in Europe inland, its mostly from collapsed buildings coupled with natural buildup.. the collapsed structures help trap debris over time including trees and plants that decay, cause soil buildup, then more trees/plants grow over them. So if you see a large untouched forest in Europe, there’s a chance there are ancient structures beneath.
LiDAR first invented in America back in the 1960s has only started to become readily available in the past 10 years where you can realistically get a team from a local University to check a site out anywhere in Europe.. the tech went from labs only to spreading around the world to universities to now the private sector can get their hands on it too so expect a lot more discoveries!
The goal for historians is for these not to just be found by accident during construction but rather something teams can readily do all over Europe. Problem is funding, so if you think this shit is cool (it is), I recommend seeing how you can donate. These discoveries can sometimes literally rewrite history!
That’s what happens when we try to build metro in central Istanbul as well.
This is Greece. You dig, you’ll find something. One of the reasons many constructions delay so much
The first photo looks like a cemetery
It looks more like a ancient cemetery
They should give up and go with trams because this will never stop happening.
You can’t make any infrastructure works in EU because of that
