I’ve just moved house. My first priority is of course to get the TV up and running. Do I just need to plug a coax cable into this?

That looks like it’s for Virgin cable not terrestrial – generally if the connector is screwed in rather than just pushed it’s Sat or Cable.
It looks like one of them there internet cables.
It does look coaxle cable slot but the thread around it suggests it is for something different than standard areal cable. I can see the cable not fitting in that so best bet, wait until wifi is set up for router and go from there.
Yeah, that’s a Virgin Media cable. You need an active Virgin Media cable subscription before you can get anything from that. Fun fact is that Virgin Media internet is also supplied over the same cable and is how the VM cable box can talk back to VM to see what you’re doing.
Fun fact : I used to know someone who supplied dodgy cable boxes back in the day and the boxes (either modded first party or 3rd party with ‘dodgy’ firmware) had to be modded so they wouldn’t talk back to Virgin otherwise they’d know you have a dodgy box. Though when they moved to a new Nagravision encryption it put a lot of ‘dodgy’ boxes out of use.
Way way way back in time you could just connect a cable feed to your TV and get the free to air channels.
Unfortunately not any more.
Coax to RF will be fine. My replacement aerial guy uses these as they are more reliable for splitting the connection between multiple tuners.
Not enough info, where does that cable go once it’s through/in the wall? Chances are the other comments are correct and it’s virgin media. But it could go up to an old fashioned aerial on the roof, or a satellite dish, or nowhere at all.
That’s an F Connector, typically used for satellite or cable
You need to track it outside and seen if it goes to a dish or under ground
When I had virgin, that’s what I had , now I don’t have virgin I just cut the wire for it and papered over it
It’s an isolator (surge protection) for a virgin media install.
So you’ll either need to sign up to virgin or have a scout around and see if you have a tv aerial on the roof or in the attic and see where the cables go. Alternatively you may have a satellite dish which could give you freesat etc through the right set top box.
Could be for a dish, my connector was exactly like this and it went to a dish. If your TV has a satellite tuner, plug it straight into the TV and tune in to the Freeview channels. Otherwise as others have said, you’ll need a tuner box.
I’m assuming your absolute first priority was to whack the kettle on and make a cup of tea.
Sorry can’t help you with the TV
Looks like a hidden camera to me. Previous owners bugged the house. You need to rip it out the wall and destroy it.
You can still get tv down the cable if there’s a satellite dish connected to the other end, you’ll just need a coax cable with an F connector on one end and a normal aerial one on the other, or a converter if you have a cable with f connectors both ends
It looks like an in line signal booster to me, there should be a small hole on the side for a dc power connector, it will look like a headphone jack. So you’ll need power to it.
It’s an Isolator for virgin media (I used to work there) it’s NOT connected to your aerial for terrestrial. It usually is installed in a little white box on the wall but lazy engineers I guess.
Have you sorted out an Internet yet? If so, you can stream most channels through their relevant apps on a Roku/Firestick etc. Sod the aerial!
No. You ignore that / wrap some duct tape around it.
Then you buy an Amazon Fire TV Stick and purchase an IPTV package.
Sorry this isn’t helpful but I’m just amazed people still use arials. I’ve not watched pre programmed TV for 15 years now. And moved homes many times, my priority is making sure I setup fibre before I move in so I can get in an connect all my TV’s (all connected to media centre pcs) to the Internet.
The thought of normal television, shudders* that’s so old-school, my days.. isn’t it dying ? It aught to be, most of it is propaganda or utter mind bubblegum.
Sorry. Lol
Random question somewhat related but why are these boxes always crusty as fuck? Everywhere I’ve lived the place has been immaculate but the boxes look like the previous tenants were spiders with a paint speck addiction
i’d recommend you get an IPTV instead, it’s a 100x cheaper (around 50 quids a year), easier to setup, works worldwide, and provides way more value and content, and saved me tons of money, no longer paying for ppv and speicific sports subscriptions like sky, i’m using IPTVdojo (i tried many providers this seems to be the best), and it’s been working like a charm
