I’ve said it before but it warrants repeating. A GOP supporter would willingly eat a shit sandwich if it meant a Democrat might smell their breath at some point. They are litterally willing to cut off their own nose to spite their face. Chuck Grassley is in one of the safest seats in the Senate and his people cheer him on, even if they’ll get screwed by the things he’s saying.
It’s also summed up by the now disturbingly relevant LBJ quote, “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” The GOP has given their voters someone to look down on in numerous forms and they’re willingly tithing as much of their income as they can and then some.

When not in the majority, there is zero desire from the GOP to work with the other side. Frankly, the GOP have become undemocratic and are proud of it. Let’s be honest. Republicans are happy their elected officials won’t work with Democrats. It’s a feature not a bug. They could even argue in bad faith that if Biden can’t get Republicans to make deals with him, he’s not half the deal maker Trump was to get Democrats to pass bills during the pandemic. The difference is Democrats are willing to make concessions to get partial wins, that’s the entire point of the American political system: compromise. Nobody gets all that they want, but everyone walks aways with equal losses in a compromise. Republicans don’t compromise because they have a religious fervor to not compromise, but also it’s worth it to cut their own noses off to spite Democrats faces.
