  1. >But Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) isn’t sure about the legislation. After all, he said on Wednesday, “passing a tax bill that makes the president look good — mailing out checks before the election — means he could be reelected, and then we won’t extend the 2017 tax cuts.”

the pain is a feature, not a bug with the modern GOP. They’re specifically unwilling to help people if they know it could lead to Biden’s reelection. They want to inflict maximum pain to amass more power.

  2. Malfeasance and authoritarianism are all the GOP has left. They can’t win honestly, and there isn’t enough new blood to replace the old, white, Christian, male demographic that makes up their base. With Abbot refusing to follow the SC’s ruling on the Border and DeSantis sending the FL National Guard to “help” at the Texas border, I think there’s a very good argument to say they are setting the stage for some half-assed attempt at secession when Biden and the Dems win in November. Whether they’ll even wait that long is frighteningly unclear, though.

  3. Some tidbits,

    >A bill under consideration in the House would, among other things, expand the child tax credit to the benefit of parents earning $40,000 a year or less.

    >In the 2022 General Social Survey, over two-thirds of people who fell into that category identified themselves as Republicans or independents. About a quarter of them lived in the census region including Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma — all red states.

    >“Vice President Biden told me that during the transition, he was warned not to expect any bipartisan cooperation on major votes,” Grunwald reported. “‘I spoke to seven different Republican Senators who said, “Joe, I’m not going to be able to help you on anything,”’ he recalled. His informants said McConnell had demanded unified resistance.”

    Also,

    >“The solution is that people don’t have to come to work to try to operate trains after they’ve had heart attacks and broken legs. But right now, where we are is caught between shutting down the economy and getting enough ***Republicans to join us*** in making sure that people have access to sick leave.” – Sen. Elizabeth Warren

    >“If you can’t do it by September, then you can’t do it by the middle of November, and you can’t do it by December, why the hell do you think you’re gonna get it done in January? There’s never any urgency around this place to get shit done.” – Sen. Jon Tester

    >”One-hundred percent of our focus is on stopping this new administration. We’re confronted with severe challenges from a new administration, and a narrow majority of Democrats in the House and a 50-50 Senate to turn America into a socialist country, and that’s 100 percent of my focus.” – Moscow Mitch

    >”What would a post-nuclear Senate look like? I assure you it would not be more efficient or more productive. I personally guarantee it.” – Moscow Mitch on ending the filibuster

    >“One thing! I want my Republican colleagues to give me one thing ― one! ― that I can go campaign on and say we did. One! Anybody sitting in the complex, if you want to come down to the floor and come explain to me, one material, meaningful, significant thing the Republican majority has done besides, ‘Well, I guess it’s not as bad as the Democrats.’” Republican Rep. Chip Roy

Article sums up American Politics fairly accurately. GOP is not interested in working for the people, just re-election. If that is though obstruction and making decisions that hurt Americans they are fine with it. You can see this with their votes on legislation and even what they will bring to a vote.

  5. If there is any benefit for workers the republicans will be against it.
Now if it was a tax credit for a company they would be all for it.

  6. > mailing out checks before the election

Actually, that was Bush1, telling people he would give to them $300 each if he was elected.

  7. I’ve said it before but it warrants repeating. A GOP supporter would willingly eat a shit sandwich if it meant a Democrat might smell their breath at some point. They are litterally willing to cut off their own nose to spite their face. Chuck Grassley is in one of the safest seats in the Senate and his people cheer him on, even if they’ll get screwed by the things he’s saying.

It’s also summed up by the now disturbingly relevant LBJ quote, “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” The GOP has given their voters someone to look down on in numerous forms and they’re willingly tithing as much of their income as they can and then some.

  8. Good read and informative. Highlights the hypocrisy of the GOP and how obstruction/my way or the highway has been their #1 strategy since Obama was president. When not in the majority, there is zero desire from the GOP to work with the other side. Frankly, the GOP have become undemocratic and are proud of it. I hope people can wake up to it and see why voting is more important than ever. There’s no reason any competent American should vote for the party that won’t compromise or work across the aisle.

  9. Maybe this is news to the media, but this has been their approach ever since Newt Gingrich. So, yay, the media caught up to what has been true since the 90’s.

  10. Republican legislation literally has nothing to do with making America better or improving anything. They just want their party in power so they can siphon the resources and blame the democrats. Republican voters are so fucking blind to this shit they actively vote against themselves in the hopes that one day they will be in that facade of authority that they have in their heads.

  11. Group Of Projectors. Why do they scream about fraud and rigged elections? Because they are doing it.

  12. WHAT YEAR IS IT???

I swear I heard this exact same plan in 2008 when McConnell swore to make Obama a 1-term president.

  13. Let’s be honest. Republicans are happy their elected officials won’t work with Democrats. It’s a feature not a bug. They could even argue in bad faith that if Biden can’t get Republicans to make deals with him, he’s not half the deal maker Trump was to get Democrats to pass bills during the pandemic. The difference is Democrats are willing to make concessions to get partial wins, that’s the entire point of the American political system: compromise. Nobody gets all that they want, but everyone walks aways with equal losses in a compromise. Republicans don’t compromise because they have a religious fervor to not compromise, but also it’s worth it to cut their own noses off to spite Democrats faces.

  14. Imagine if we didn’t have the electoral college and the Republican Party had to appeal to the majority of Americans.

  15. When the Nixon administration wanted a coup in Chile, President Nixon ordered the CIA to “make the economy scream” in Chile. This is the exact strategy today’s Republican party is following. Republicans want their fellow Americans to feel real pain in order to place a criminal into the White House. There’s no limit to the hardships they will cause us in order to achieve that goal.

  16. America: Hey a bipartisan bill that doesn’t look too bad and helps parents, this is great!

Senate Republicans: GFY – it’s an election year and we don’t care if this helps YOU or not. All we care about is defeating Biden.
