My wife and 11 year old walked the dog tonight by themselves, pretty much for the first time. I don’t think I want them to again.
There are too many dangerous men out there. For every successful one of these attacks there are countless ones where it’s just injuries like the young girl in Ballyfermot. And the men are back on the street.
Then you have the fellas fantasising about it but not doing it, yet.
It’s terrifying. We can all talk about hanging or torturing the perpetrators after the fact. But how do we stop it? We probably can’t. Fuck this.
We always get when something like this happens some guys saying “oh it’s not all men blah blah”. That’s the bullshit that annoys me most as a man, some men get so caught up thinking women looking for equal rights is a bad thing but truth be told we have a massive privilege when it comes to being able to go out for a run or a walk safely. I know of a lot of female friends who say they’re too scared to go for a run alone, especially at night and honestly even if these occurrences are rare they still happen.
No one should ever go out for a simple jog and not make it home because of a random attack.
This is really horrific and incredibly devastating I can only imagine, for the woman’s family. I feel really upset reading how young she was also, hits home as I have a young sibling also.

There’s nothing “Random” about this sort of attack, the commonality is mental illness. Healthy people don’t “randomly” murder strangers in cold blood in public without regard for getting away with it.

You know, we do live in a democracy. Why don’t we start campaigning to get self defence tools such as pepper spray legalised? Three years ago the government said they have no plans to legalise pepper spray, but they can’t ignore us if enough of us make noise demanding these plans be changed.
