On the Border, Republicans Set a Trap, Then Fell Into It

  1. No they didn’t. Their voters don’t care and will never hear about this anyway. How do people still not understand. Good things happen? Republicans did it. Bad things happen? Dems did it. For the rest of our lives that should be where our understanding of the right begins. That’s our starting point and we work from there.

  2. The more important question for left-leaning people, why were the Dems so eager to fall into it themselves?

  3. The Republicans are just a collection of anti-American conmen and grifters.

  4. Those are the dangers if the only thing you have to offer are performative politics and cheap stunts. I wish more people would realize that the majority of GOP members of congress have very little interest (and incentive) to invest themselves into the laborious work of governing for the people

  5. Who would have thought Trump would get them to do some stupid… Oh right most people.

  6. >Mr. Trump trashed the bipartisan proposal quickly after it was rolled out, and senators who embraced it risked running afoul of him and his supporters.

As expected, the GOP doesn’t waste an opportunity to show America that they’re all spineless cowards who are unable to stand up to the orange buffoon.

  7. The only thing that excites them is destruction. The GOP hyper-ventilates like a boy with a toy bulldozer, plowing the fuck out of the Sonoran Desert, killing animals and plants, crushing the microbiotic crust, churning up bones at ancient burial sites of the Tohono O’odham.

Fuck them, they’re just Indians. We are white people with a God-given right to fuck up everything.

  8. Republicans skuttling their own border deal for Jeffrey Epstein’s incontinent old coke buddy to own the libs…what a platform.

  9. No one follows what’s happening in congress. Voters trust Republicans on the border more than Democrats. No one will remember that this will happem. Republicans will keep saying Biden and the Democrats are keeping the border open and most people will believe them.

  10. It would be better if there was more news coverage over the “fyre festival” level shit show that is the trucker border convoy

  11. I think you’re over estimating the way a majority of Americans feel about the border. The bill is not going to pass and if Biden does nothing he’s in trouble with a lot of swing voters, and if he does something via executive order people are gonna call him out for having the ability to do something all along.

  12. Republicans demanded action on the border, Dems signaled they would vote for a hard-right bill that contained almost everything they wanted, Biden signaled he would sign it, and Republicans said no. Hard to imagine a better way to illustrate how unserious the GOP is on this issue. The Biden campaign has an opportunity to flip the script to their advantage if they play their cards right.

  13. Are all these news sites in a contest to see who can make the most articles about this without adding any new information? I swear I’ve seen like six new articles about this every day now. “Republicans are refusing a bipartisan deal…”

On the border. Yes we all know that. You’re not adding fucking anything to the discussion here NYT

  14. I would call them the “Do-nothing-party,” but they’ve done plenty to undermine democracy and put us all in peril.

  15. The GOP did change their symbol so the elephant is stepping on his own dick now.

  16. It’s only a trap if they suffer consequences from it. Hopefully they do.

  17. I’m starting to feel tiny rays of hope for November, but man, do we really need the GOP to crater HARD in the elections to save this country. Vote Blue 2024.

  18. It was just a ploy. The GQP don’t have a platform to run on, so they don’t want to solve it. Actually, the losers have got nothing.

  19. The border is insecure today because of Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans. Day 1

  20. Can anyone explain what the trap is?

This whole episode feels like the Merrick Garland saga from the Obama era, but worse. Republicans say “We’re not giving you shit”. So the Democrats in response… flank Republicans from the right and give them what they want. And then the Republicans *continue* to say, “Get fucked”. Except in this case, instead of just breaking a norm, Republicans are defying a Supreme Court ruling. They’re literally out there going “We’re above the law”, and Democrats are trying to appease them.

Why would a Republican ever take this legislation when they’re going way beyond it? If they win the next election, they can enshrine this stuff in law anyway and take the win. If they don’t win, they just keep doing what they’re doing knowing Democrats won’t stop them. They don’t care if you call them hypocrites. They’re getting what they want. Democrats get the moral high ground. Republicans get the scoreboard.

  21. No, Democrats fell into the Republican trap again.

Everyone is trying very hard to pretend that this all made Biden look good – offering to compromise with the Republicans and then revealing them to not be interested in compromise – but it didn’t. All this adds up to for people who are not predisposed to vote for Biden is “Biden agreed with Republicans there was a border crisis but failed to do anything about it.”

  22. “We can’t pass a border security bill— we’re much too busy impeaching the homeland security secretary because of border security!”

Listening to these assholes preen about terrorists and fentanyl while blocking action to fix it is absurd

  23. Trump wanted to get rid of Obamacare without a replacement. His supporters were all for it. My guess a significant portion of his base are better off with Obamacare due to preexisting conditions , out of work or self employed. But they love the guy who craps on their needs everyday. Crazy world we live in.

  24. Nothing will convince his followers not to vote for him. His core is solid, and most of them just don’t care if he’s a rapist or insurrectionist or any of the other accusations. He’s still their guy and they see him as the best chance of pushing the USA into a conservative-religious direction. They’re OK with this happening even at the expense of democracy — better to burn it down and start over than let the liberals win.

But the centrists and independents pay at least some attention, and things like this do bother them. Those are the votes he can lose, and he can’t afford it.

  25. The Cult of Trump is such an embarrassment.
Can you imagine the legacy these MAGA asshats are leaving for their families?

  26. Republicans are always stepping on their own Johnsons.

  27. This is a bigger win for Biden than having the thing pass. Trump is so stupid.

  28. Republicans would cut off their face to spite their nose.

  29. A serious comment. Has not President Biden been saying for years that the border is secure. What has made President Biden change his mind and saying the border is not secure?

  30. And the best part? We’ve got ‘em cornered. And they know it.

If they *ever* bring up this ‘Biden border’ bullshit again? Let’s play the tapes of how the republicans refused to do anything about the border. About how they wanted to deliberately leave it so it’d get worse, making it a winning wedge issue for Donald Trump.

Put it on blast every single time.

  31. It doesn’t matter. People will still be split around 50/50ish on who is to blame for the dysfunction.

  32. So how much is true that the proposed bill has nothing to do with actually fixing the border but instead contains handouts to countries like Ukraine or Israel? Apparently that’s why they are refusing to go along with it?

  33. It’s all the same playbook. Don’t you remember when Moscow Mitch made the Senate the “place where bills go to die”? Or how he stole those SCOTUS seats?
