  2. I do not like attempts that target the wallet of people after they made a totally legal decision. And you treat people differently. I understand that this sucks. The state was ok with SUVs beforehand an took the sales tax with no complaint. Charging an insane amount of money for parking all of a sudden is just a terrible attempt to handle this.

    Raise the taxes on SUV so you can make the decision when you buy it. Take a year of permanent parking extra as taxes. No problem with that. But afterward, actions feel like a punishment.

  4. Good. Europe don’t need large SUVs. They are only pushed by the manufacturers as they are not classed as cars and don’t need to meet the same emmissions levels. They don’t fit Europe’s smaller roads either.

  8. This needs to be done and more! The auto industry is knowingly producing fuel inefficient almost trucks because they can make more money doing so than creating small efficient cars. Has to start somewhere.

    There was a referendum. And there was a low turnout.

  15. This is all a farce anyway: only about 6% of all parisians have voted, yet proponents are lying that apparently 55% are all for it while it is actually only 55% of the 6% who voted. So it’s three percent of all parisiany who voted for it.

    Adding to this that the inhabitants of paris are exempt anyway, thus it only affects tourists and who wants to go into Paris by car anyway.

    The misrepresentation is absolutely ridiculous!

  16. Why? It doesn’t apply to Paris residents and considering only 5.7% turned out to vote. **Why didn’t they vote to protect their SUVs?**

  23. Turnout was 5.88%. The price increase got 54% of the vote. At that point you could argue that there is almost no public interest and the referendum could be scrapped. All these people in this thread who clearly didn’t even take the time to read more than the headline have a stronger opinion than actual parisians.

  25. I think this should be implemented everywhere. There is no reason why you should own a gas guzzling SUV in Europe. If you do you should be able to afford the consequences.

  28. Only around 30% of people living in Paris own a car and SUV owners are a small subset of that number. I imagine many of those living in Paris keep their SUVs parked underground in private garages. The garage under my building (in the 18th, which voted heavily to raise street SUV parking prices) does have a handful of SUVs.

    Of course, the vote on Sunday does not change anything for them though obviously in the future there’s a high likelihood of them having to pay more to park on the street as well.

  30. it is beyond me how SUV went so popular in EU to begin with, with our narrow streets and all. This american trend is ridiculous and I see it coming to the pickups too and I wonder where the fk a full sized american style pickup truck (because yes, they are that big) will fit in most EU dirtroads?

  35. Poor babies. SUVs in Paris are horrible. Streets are far too narrow and they block traffic.

  37. I don’t like cars in cities either, but this is a bit ridiculous.
    It’s not like the SUV’s take up three times as much space as normal cars. How would you even enforce this?
    Just do it like Amsterdam does, and triple all parking fees.

  38. Easy life hack: if you don’t want to pay a ton for parking, don’t own a stupid vehicle that’s toxic to society.

  39. If your car needs 3 parking lots to fix, *then* you should pay 3 times the fee. I’m pretty sure those additional fees will be used to make life of SUV drivers In Paris better. /s

    SUV’s are not for people who don’t actually need them. Not only that, but these cars are a deadly threat to anyone in a regular car in case of a collision.

  42. If you’re smart and rich enough to live inside Paris, you’re smart enough to not have a SUV. Being a car owner there is already painfully costing in time

  43. It’s not only ‘large’ SUV’s It also applies to regular vehicles. The Peugeot 3008 fully electric ‘SUV’ whose physical footprint is a bit less than that of a Honda Civic is one of the cars affected yet it is less polluting than any ICE. They’ve gone by weight instead of some working out some combination of weight, volume, propulsion to see what cars are really objectionable. It is a lazy proposal especially considering the turnout and how the unintended effects it causes to drivers who have been relatively early adopters of EVs.

  45. What exactly is an SUV? Have they defined a size/weight? Or is it just any high-riding vehicle regardless of footprint? Does it apply to electric?
