Posting because the lying bastards are charging people for this and their own damn literature shows they are not meant to.
Document is Under “Transition period workshop November 2023” [Producers – Re-Turn](https://re-turn.ie/producer/)
Slide 8 is the transition period date.
Slide 15 is the no charge part.
Tesco enters the chat
~~Re-turn aren’t charging anyone anything, its the supermarkets trying to gouge you.~~
~~Stop blaming the re-turn scheme on this happening, if it wasn’t this scheme, it would be something else.~~
Turns out I’m just a miserable cunt looking for a fight.
From the re-turn website FAQ: https://re-turn.ie
“Starting February 1, 2024, retailers have a 4-month transition period during which they can sell both new drinks containers with the Re-turn logo and older drinks containers that do not feature this logo. During this time, drinks containers can incur a deposit in two ways:
By having the Re-turn logo with a registered barcode
By having a barcode that is registered as part of the scheme without the Re-turn logo.”
I have yet to see a bottle with the new logo.
It’s not the retailers.
Re-Turn realised, very late in the day, that were were hundreds of products on shelves that had international barcodes that the return machines would pay out on, even though they had no logo. Therefore, there were hundreds of products without logos that people could get a refund on without having paid a deposit.
Re-Turn had to get the retailers to hastily start charging deposits for these or else they’d lose a fortune. And this is why the messaging that Re-Turn gave all along, that you only pay deposits on items with logos, totally contradicts the reality.
The rollout of this has been a total balls up by Re-Turn.
Shoplift.
Beat the system. FTW
Spoilers: The prices will go up again on 14th of March.
The transition period is 4 months, not one and a bit.
I was in Dunnes today and it looked like they were simply clearing old stock from the fridge presumably to be returned to manufacturer or else sold discounted.
I had expected large retailers to be the leaders on this but their offering has been piss poor thus far.
You’re not being charged if the bottle won’t work in the machine, some old stock works. It’s a non issue.
Yeah it’s almost like they shoulda either rolled it out progressively.
I don’t know if it helps but I found this disclaimer on the Re-turn website:
“*To prevent waste, for a limited period from 1 February, there will be some stock of plastic bottles and cans that may not feature the Re-turn logo. Should consumers be charged a deposit on these drinks containers, please be assured that you will get your deposit back when you return empty and undamaged to RVM Deposit Return Points nationwide.”
I guess we could read on the receipt if we were charged a deposit?
And still no mention how people who already recycle are supposed to get their deposit back …making me not use the green bin and bring rubbish to the shops is fucking dumb.
