Former PM criticises ministers for ‘moral outrage’ of ‘systematically shredding’ social security system

Britain is in the throes of a hidden poverty “epidemic”, with the worst-affected households living in squalor and going without food, heating and everyday basics such as clean clothes and toothpaste, the former UK prime minister Gordon Brown has said.

Brown accused the government of creating a wall of silence around “obscene” levels of destitution in the UK and criticised ministers for “systematically shredding” a social security system that had once provided a safety net for the poorest.

  1. I actually like Gordon brown, unfortunately he was in a sticky situation with the crash that happened but he seemed like a good person at least.

Think he was the last pm who was actually a truly good person and ment what he said. I’m not a labour voter I just believe he ment what he said.

If he ran In Scotland for the labour party here I might actually take them seriously and change my vote

  2. So how’s that “best of both worlds” going then, Gordon?

  3. Well use the upcoming Labour landslide to force through REAL CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGE so that we can break out of this cycle?

No? Just going to fanny about for a couple terms? Backpedal on any and all radical policies? Gotcha.

  4. He caused a lot of the problems by deregulation of FS which helped to crash the economy, he then created massive asset bubbles with QE, then left the tories with trillions of debt.

He then had the gall to campaign/lie for Scotland to stay in the union which has been proven to be a definitive act of self harm. No amount of rose tinted shite about empire or an imagined past can disavow you of that fact.

The man is a useless Weegie trumpet. Fuck off broon naebdy cares.

  5. Maybe we should sell some of our gold reserve? Gold prices are pretty decent at the moment….
    Oh wait…

  6. I really wish he had come to Holyrood; he’d have been a fantastic leader here.

  7. Maybe him and his Nu Labour cronies shouldn’t have kick started the whole thing then, with their fake wars and selling all the gold reserves off when it was at record low value….

  8. The English, Welsh and Northern Irish have to be levied taxes in order to cover the profligacy of interns occupying the Regional Assembly at Holyrood.

  9. I can’t see why he should take that line, he helped to create it.. He sold of the nation’s gold at a cheap price and raided the pensions. The man a complete and utter senile c*nt.

  10. We never actually recovered from his own tenure.

  11. “Gordon Brown provides Better Together update”
