I can understand carrying fireworks given the potential dangers when a few idiots decide to fire them at the Police. But face masks sums up the clampdown of citizen freedoms that are gradually being eroded.

Last time I marched against fascist scum they literally screamed ‘your job is gone’ at a speaker. It’s a well known far right tactic to ID counter protesters and then make false reports to their workplace.
Anyone who backs this measure has spent suspiciously little time marching against fascists.

Ban facemasks in protests, and you’ll see them in riots instead.
So the police have funding to enforce us **not** wearing face masks now, but not to investigate civil theft?

Criminal damage & minor arson will get your point across as effectively, with a far far lower risk of being caught & similar legal consequences.

Flares, I agree with, but masks are used to protect identity. Yes, someone can use that to commit violence while in a protest and get away with it, but it stops police or people from going after protestors.
But I don’t know why people are shocked you aren’t allowed to carry anything for self-defence in the UK because it could be used to cause harm. So, of course, uk will ban masks. Once again, something you can use to protect yourself is banned because bad people could use it for bad things.
