Hammersmith Bridge May Never Reopen

  1. #£250 million??? you might as well build a new bridge!

  2. If it can be kept open for pedestrians and cyclists, seems that £250m if it is the cost of repairing it to allow motor vehicles, you could do a lot of road repairs and improvements with that level of money.

  3. Misleading headline, it’s only closed for cars. It’s still very much open for pedestrians and fully reopening for cyclists this month.

  4. If it never reopens for cars again, I propose that it be turned into the Garden Bridge project that never was. Only this time, forget that Heatherwick nonsense, make it into a space for allotments for residents of Hammersmith & Fulham northside and Richmond upon Thames southside. Big shed/tea hut in the middle for both.

  5. The Economist pointed out this as a great example of London’s daft transport system. Because roads are paid for individual councils, the two councils involved don’t want to spend such a vast sum on repairs.

But the government can’t fund it either: the Tories wouldn’t look good giving money to two incredibly rich councils for a bit of road when there are kids breathing in mould in council houses up north.

So it will just stay closed (to motor vehicles) forever.

  6. Good. I mean it has drawbacks, namely for public transport, but they’ve rightly decided that £250m+ (because it was always going to go over that quote) is better spent elsewhere.
