  1. Nolan seems like a really cool dude.

Sticks his neck out for Fast and Furious, Zack Snyder, and now Robert Downey Jrs role that doesn’t get seen as more than just a superhero performance

  2. Is everyone finally seeing how nerdy nolan is.
    Its adorable

It makes sense all of his movies feature a geeky loner whose obsession begins to destroy his life, eventually falls for a strong but mysterious woman, who saves him before it too late, even if he thinks it already is.

  3. Hard to argue with.

Pretty much last chance at that kind of gig for Downey Jr. He knew it. Those who fought for him to be in it knew it. Marvel needed people to buy into it. Downey Jr sold it from first second to last, setting the audience interest for Marvel movies in general.

Without his performance, everything that followed up until ‘Avengers: Endgame’ would not have happened. It was a monumental shift in the industry, and the movie going audience.

Some would argue for the worse. Maybe they are right. But, I think it has been pretty miraculous what Feige, and Marvel accomplished, and as Nolan alludes to, it was all down to one casting decision paying off.

  4. Robert definitely is Tony, just like Rowan is Bean. There could be no other Mr. Bean.

  5. Seems factual to me. They build a multi billion dollar franchise off him and ironman being successful.

  6. I don’t like marvel movies. They’re a cheap attempt to fleece money off of people like me.

But also I love them. And this headline is 100% correct. He fucking killed it. Just like Tony McGuire and Kirstin Dunst and Willem Defoe in Spider-Man. Hell, Franco and Simmons. Shit literally everyone in those first two movies. Remember how novel and comic-book-esque they were? And that first Ironman movie?

God those were the days. Then just kept smashing the money button.

Edit: I am speaking solely for myself here. So before any of you comment/reply: that was *my* take. I know really good stuff happened after; I just revolted at the continued money grabbing.

  7. Without the first Iron Man movie being a massive hit, which was largely due to RDJ, theres no decade+ of MCU. I think the first Avengers movie (not Captain America, the Avengers) is what really caused the explosion, but you don’t get there without RDJ

  8. Yeah iron man 1 and 2 were good, everything else that followed was kinda embarrassing. Disney doesn’t mean “magic” to me anymore, just a garbage and a waste of time.

  9. I remember when I first heard he was cast. I was like “oh damn, that might actually be awesome”. After Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I was totally ready for an RDJ renaissance. So yeah, absolute grand slam casting.

  10. RDJ was probably the best casting in all of marvel casting so far.

  11. Downey was the pioneer of making it ok to watch comic book adaptations is what it comes down to, he made what was only the interest of a few million an international phenomenon… in my opinion.

    He made it work.

Edit: The discussion is obviously much more complex I.e. references to Batman franchises, etc… I guess I mean more so he made the Marvel Universe work, more specifically.

  12. Agree with Nolan on this and Downey Jr as a pretty good actor. As in Nolan film itself.

What makes me cringe is the discussions around here as if were a casting as Brando on Godfather or Day-Lewis at There Will Be Blood.

There is a huge difference (in acting) between Downe’s Iron Man and Oppenheirmer, for which will earn an Oscar (mark my words).

Nolan just try to be condescent and polite with an industry in which he lives and relies all his projects. Which is fine.

  13. It was a perfectly casted role .

So many good ones , I think of the cinematic masterpiece one Jason Lee portrayed as Brody in the picture “Mallrats’ and also later for a cameo in the acclaimed “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”.

  14. Pure nonsense , the marvel movies don’t affect the world of cinema at all

  15. Such pomposity from the modern master of pompous filmmaking can’t be taken without pomp!
