British parliamentarian Rees-Mogg: If the USA cannot help Kyiv with money, Europe should buy weapons for Ukraine from the USA

>“I believe that the American opinion that Europe, including the UK, does not care enough about its security is not entirely unfounded. And also that the security of Ukraine is initially a European issue, which, yes, has consequences for the rest of the world, but European security directly depends on whether Russia defeats Ukraine and whether it becomes a threat to other European states. Therefore, if for some reason the United States is not able to provide money, then I think it is very important to buy weapons and send them to Ukraine from the United States,” the politician said.
“If you look at what Britain did in its relationship with the US during the Second World War, initially we bought weapons from them. To some extent they lent us money, but to another extent we paid them in hard cash because we needed the weapons they made. Without this, we would not be able to fight,” the parliamentarian noted.
“So I believe that funding arms purchases when the US cannot provide assistance is a very sensible thing to do and that in the vast majority of cases it is in Europe’s interests. For example, from the point of view of Poland and so on, it is fundamentally important for them that Ukraine is protected,” concluded Jacob Rees-Mogg.
A similar statement was made earlier in the European Parliament. Thus, the representative of Hungary, a member of the Security Committees and the Committee on Foreign Relations, Attila Ara-Kovacs, called for considering the possibility for the European Union to purchase weapons from the United States of America for their subsequent transfer to Ukraine.
Finally… Someone gets it… Europe… Decades of leaching off the American for their defense needs. They funded Russia and helped build up the Russian military at every turn… While refusing to fund their own military… America told them to stop over and over and over again… The response? They laughed at us… Then when the shit hits the fan who do they blame? Not themelves… They blame America…
But now 1 guy finally steps up and gets it right… America will sell Europe all the weapons and ammo they need… To give to Ukraine… This guy actually gets it… Reach deep into those pockets and find that money… Then send it over to America and we will send you the weapons and ammo needed… The weapons and ammo you refused to buy over the past decades as you let greed and selfishness guide your actions… Want someone to blame? Blame yourselves… Now reach deep into those pockets and find that money… Then send it on over to America… We have everything you need… Everything you refused to pay for as you tried to use the American and his paycheck for your defense needs… Show us the money or STFU… Ammo? Weapons? We have it… You want it? Give us money… But that is unfair? We should pay for your own mistakes? Right…
Glad somebody else finally thought of it.
Jesus christ this is the first time ever that I agree with that lunatic.
He is a joke in the UK, but spot on here.
The US is literally the last place Europe should be buying weapons from. Two key lessons from the war are that Europe needs a string domestic arms industry and that the Americans can’t be trusted. I’m okay with buying a limited number of shells from SK, but the rest of the limited budgets needs to go to domestic manufacturers to help them ramp up.
Bullshit. EU should start producing its own heavy military equipment and buy it from themselves, not from USA!
Europe should grow some military manufacturing balls and show them to USA.
Ding ding ding
Short term perhaps yes, if there are shortages in europe, but we need to prioritize building back up our arms production capabilities in europe and in/around ukraine.
It’s both a strategic need for that, but also cost efficient needs to try to match what russia/iran/nkorea/china is doing. So we need to develop low cost mass produced capabilities if we are to be able to stand in this long term.
Rees-Mogg is a comic book level kind of rich asshole most of the time, but he’s got a point here.
I guess a broken clock really is right twice a day.
If it’s about buying surplus military material at low cost, fine. Otherwise, for new material, we have our own suppliers thanks
Europe should boost its own production. Don’t let US profit from this
Nah, the US is causing the problem with getting aid to ukraine, it would be idiotic to now send billions of our own money to the US, buy from anyone else if that’s what is required or start producing our own, we’re either in this together or we are not, and right now the US is proving we are not in it together, fair play to the people of europe for making it clear to those in power, that we do and will continue to support ukraine for as long as it is necessary.
What a fucking joke. USA should not be rewarded for endangering NATO allies
The US showed that we can’t trust them in times of need. More specific the Republicans. In case of Russian agression, and with the power the Republicans have, they wouldn’t help us, so we should no waste money with them and create our own wepons.
Not USA.. make / use our own.. it’s for the best
Then at the tail-end end of the war, when Europe is bankrupt for the foreseeable future…America stops selling weapons, jumps in to action…delivers the killing blow and tells us for the next 50 years we’d he speaking Russian if it weren’t them! It’s perfect!
Europe has the Arm’s industry in place they just lack the political willpower to actually spend on their militaries to support a large sustained increase.
The USA spends about 3.5% of it’s GDP on the military.
Of the big European countries Germany 1.57%, France 1.9%, Italy 1.46%, UK 2.07%.
The US is the main supplier for large quantities of military supplies because our spending is so large and we spend the money to support it. Europe in it’s current state can produce military equipment and munitions but spends so little it really can’t support any depth or large quantities of supplies without being forced to turn to the US.
Personally I wish all NATO countries would spend at least 2.5% and for Europe to be more self reliant. The US is the most powerful military on the planet but it’s always since day one been at the mercy of the political winds.
The USA will be delighted with that. That’s basically how they became so rich from World War 2. After two to three years they’ll realise the money tree is dying, send their own troops to finish it and claim the glory. And Europe will be indebted to them – literally and metaphorically – for the next 75 years.
The Republicans will, of course, slap the prices up.
