Swiss police have said that a 32-year-old Iranian asylum-seeker was killed by police after he used an axe and a knife to seize more than a dozen hostages for several hours on a train in western Switzerland. No passengers were injured.

The man took the hostages early Thursday evening and police, alerted by passengers, sealed off the area while the train was stopped in the town of Essert-sous-Champvent, police in the French-speaking Vaud region said on Friday.

The man, speaking Farsi and English, demanded that the train engineer join the 15 hostages.

Almost four hours after the incident began, police stormed the train after trying to negotiate with the man through an interpreter. More than 60 officers were involved.

“The hostages were all freed safe and sound,” a police statement said. “The hostage-taker was mortally injured during the operation.”

Vincent Derouand, a spokesman for the Vaud prosecutors’ office, said an investigation was underway in part to determine the man’s motive.

  2. As an Iranian, I’m happy that he’s gone and victims are fine. But also sad that it happened in the first place.

Any idea yet about the motivation? Why would he hold them for hours? It seems rare.

  3. Does it have anything to do with the war in Gaza?

  4. Neutrality is getting harder, apparently, can’t just collect money and stay out of it these days…

  5. When will our leaders learn? We the people already know.

  6. Is that how Iran is going to attack the west? Just use a bunch of sleeper agents to publicly take hostages everywhere and make a big scene

  7. Good. Regardless of who they are, if they do crap like this, they get what they get

  8. Interesting, they only killed the person responsible for taking the hostages? They didn’t drop a dozen bombs on the train, kill a 140 innocents, and then claim that this wouldn’t have happened if he would’ve just returned the hostages?

  9. I may lean out the window a bit, but I have the feeling that if you want asylum, taking people hostage is not exactly the best way to do it
