Is anyone familiar with the numerical markings on T55 tanks? I might have just found a relic. Left picture is from the oryx-list, right is 1956 Hungary.

  3. I’m not sure if these are the same tanks at all. Same type for sure (recent picture shows a T55, the earlier one is a T54 variant, but those were all modernized to T55 standard in the 60s). But I don’t know the logic behind the numberical markings of the soviet army. It might be a serial number (which would mean it is the same exact tanks), but it can just be a brigade level marking (meaning there are several T55s marked 320).

    Maybe some of you have some ideas.

  6. Lol, it would be funny if it is. But these numbers would indicate like 3rd squadron – 2nd platoon – 0 platoon commanders tank. Definitely not the number in the entire Russian army since 1956.

  21. Left is a **T-55** and right is a **T-54**, so not the same tank.
    Also, T-55 didn’t enter production until 1958, so none were present in Hungary.

  23. First digit is name tank brigade. It means 25th tank brigade will have tanks 201-299

  27. These are unit Markings of some kind, probably smaller than divisional.

  28. It’s quite likely that tank was rolling through the streets of Budapest in 1956. Crazy to think about.

  31. IDK could just mean 3rd compagny, 2nd platoon, platoonleader tank or some such.
