I wanted to comment here since I can’t on the coronavirusuk sub.
There’s no doubt masks reduce transmission, but it’s clear that it’s not enough to change the big picture throughout the whole pandemic. They have always worked when social distancing was a thing because it reduces droplets passing a far distance.
I’m also tired of people saying it takes no effort to put one on. Even in a shop it’s a nightmare to communicate which is why I only kept them on public transport when it stopped being law, it’s going to be worse in a school. It’s not particularly pleasant to have to wear them for a long time either and you’d know that if you’ve worked with them on. Basically the costs outweigh the benefits… but it’s also the only thing they can really do other than bubbles and online learning
I imagine the data is inconclusive with kids just not wearing them.
I still don’t get why kids seem to get a full pass on masks when in shops, even when parents are with then and they themselves are masked up.
Odd. This goes directly against two studies by the CDC that show that they do have an impact.
South Korea would like a word… behind a mask of course.
The important thing isn’t whether it works. It’s that bojo can pretend he tried. But not actually have to try. Because that would offend cunts. And cunts are a major voter block in the UK.
Not really surprising, there’s no good evidence that mask mandates make a difference in the national figures either. And although masks (worn correctly, another big caveat with teenagers) do reduce the likelihood of a transmissible event, it has always seemed unlikely that it would reduce it very much when a bunch of people are in the same room for 40 minutes.
I don’t really mind a mask mandate in shops, though I think it’s pointless and would prefer it to be dropped. Wearing a mask for 10 minutes is not a serious hardship. But mandating people to wear one solidly for hours (and this includes long distance trains, as well as schools) should be backed by some good evidence that it makes a difference, and I haven’t seen any of that.
This measure always looked like pure theatre and that would seem to be the case.

What are US kids doing that ours aren’t?
