Luckily, the NATO countries that Russia is most likely to attack (Poland, Finland, and especially the Baltics) all spend over 2% of their GDP on defense. The defense of the alliance should not depend on Trump’s personal whims and whether he feels an attacked country is worthy enough to protect.

This headline is misleading. He’s saying that European countries need to carry their weight and increase their defense spending to *at least* 2% of GDP. And he’s right. Americans have too many things to take care of at home to also have to provide security to a bunch of rich countries that can’t be bothered to invest in their own militaries.
Like with this situation in the Red Sea that’s shut down traffic thru the Suez Canal – why is it America’s job to protect Europe’s trade routes with Asia? Europe should be able to handle that themselves. But it seems like the UK is the only European country that is even capable of doing anything at all. This needs to change.
