  1. Christus Mansionem Benedicat: May god bless this house. It’s traditionally written there by the „star singers“ on the 6th of january

  2. Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Jesus Christ bless my house). On January the 6th the Biblical Magi ( holy three kings / heilige drei Könige) go from house to house in Germany to bless it and sing you something nice. Mostly performed by children and of course a donation for the catholic church is due, as well as some sweets for the kids.

  3. Ah lot of churches also offer stickers instead of the chalk writings.

I was a star singer as a kid (Late 90s) and we switched to stickers cause a lot of people wanted to keep the blessings from previous years and the stickers are more durable than a chalk writing.

  4. I remember visiting my grsndparents in NRW and going nuts for Sternsinger. I’m bi-racial and every house was the same: “Finally you didn’t have to paint Melchior’s face”

Is the blackfacing still part of the tradition?

  5. I always thought it was some infos for the Feuerwehr in case of massive fire.
I finally know what it is about now.

  6. IT is a Christian or. Catholic Thing. Three “Sternsinger”/Carolers Caspar, Melchior & Baltasar (= the “Heiligen Drei Könige”/ The three wise men ) go from House to House and carry Jesus blessings and take up collections for children in need.

… This is why many people actually think C + M + B is Caspar, Melchior & Baltasar.
But instead it Stands for “Christus mansionem benedictat.” = Christus segne dieses Haus / Christ Bless this House.

  7. It’s called chalking of the doors and it is done every year n the epiphany, catholic thing for sure, not sure about other Christian sects

  8. I thought it was in the format 20*C+M+B*22 but all the pics I’ve just looked up have it as 20*C+M+B+22.

What is the significance of the * vs the + ?

  9. It’s the name of the 3 kings that brought gifts to Jesus . Casper Melchior and Balthasar . In Poland it’s tradition to put their letters on the doors.

  10. And I sit here thinking, like an idiot, what 20 and 22 means for minutes… In my defence it is very early where I live…

  11. Christus mansionem benedicat
    Aka Christus bless our house
People but it up who want their houses to be blessed for the new year
