  1. The first truly stupid president in my lifetime. There might have been people I disagreed with, but at least they were of average intelligence. Stubb has nothing going on.

Well, I guess he’ll be quite harmless. Believes in nothing, has no values, only says what he thinks the audience wants to hear.

  2. I voted for the other guy and this is hopefully not just copium but I believe he’ll be a good president

  3. Happy to have a president who is not going to be 70+ year old by the end of his term.

  4. It’s the 3rd time Haavisto came in 2nd place (2012, 2018, 2024).

  5. I would’ve been fine with either of them tbh. They’re both very experienced in foreign policy and quite sensible in their views. The people most upset with the choices were those on the far right, as one is a “globalist” and the other is gay.

  6. Well new president for you guys congrats hopefully it bodes well for the country!

  7. He won because the opponent is gay. This is Finland in 2024.

  8. Very glad that he’s the next president of Finland! Great for Nordic-Baltic region.

  9. I voted for the other guy, but the differences between the two candidates are very minimal imo. I think he’ll be a decent president, not like the role has much impact internally.

  10. Never really liked the guy. He’s got this slick hustle bustle, razzle dazzle vibe that rubs me the wrong way. Feels like he’ll either want me to invest in his crypto scheme or rate his Saul Goodman impression. He also smiles way too much for a Finn and also in that phony way where his mouth goes super wide, but his eyes don’t move at all.

Still, he’s far from a disaster and doesn’t have any major objective faults I can point to. His experitise is also in foreign affairs, which is where most of the president of Finland’s power lies. The other candidate might have been our former foreign minister, who officially received our membership to Nato and immediately gave our ratification to Sweden, but Stubb’s party is the only one that was pro-Nato before 2022.

Maybe I’ll reset my opinion and give him another shot. The retiring president also had a reputation as kind of a dick in his youth, but turned out to be the most popular president in living memory.

  11. And suddenly, half of the finnish population are homophobic boomers (according to left)😂

  12. The noteworthy thing about this election is that it was so “boring”. And this is a good thing. This signals consensus. There was no polarization and I believe that a huge majority of Finns would say they are ok with the outcome. The actual differences of opinion between the 2 candidates in the second round were minimal which tells us that the vast majority of us Finns are very much aligned when it comes to our liberal and democratic values, appreciation of European co-operation and our understanding of the geopolitical landscape. This makes me happy and positive about the future of our country and the unity of our people.

  13. This was not my candidate, but I can live with this. He’ll do the job ok.

  14. Finland probably has the most boring elections in the world, in a good sense. I watched as the initial results were announced, and both congratulated each other for good campaign, and praised each other. As the results were finalised, Haavisto basically said “Stubb has won, he will be an excellent president for our country. Now we need to stop any whining and fall in line behind him.”.

EDIT: Oh, Stubb is visiting Haavisto in his campaign headquarters as we speak, and is speaking to Haavisto and his supporters. Everybody is cheering him.

  15. Good choice for Finland, would’ve been happy with Haavisto as well.

  16. Congratulations to our Finnish neighbours from Norway.

Stubb had a YouTube channel with the School of Transnational Governance, where he was the headmaster (and still is, I believe, just on a hiatus while he’s President).

He covered topics like “Understanding the war in Ukraine” and “Geopolitics with Alex” and I have watched all his lectures. I really respect him as a professor and teacher, and learned a lot from the videos he posted.

He’s also writing a book, and read from it chapter by chapter on YouTube, inviting us who watched to contribute in the comment section, and he frequently commented on people’s posts. That is absolutely great.

I know nothing about him as a politician, but as a scholar I have a very deep respect for him.

    Again, congratulations.
