  1. Yea, they aren’t training a generation of protégés they’re working the parents from sunrise to sunset.

  2. Is it just me who think this will lead to a rise in the number of elementary school kids committing suicide?

  3. basically extended childcare cause their parents can’t get off work

Way to go for their birthrates

  4. More suicide and less births! How to kill your demographics 1.0

People shit on Japan for work culture and societal pressure. But they’ve acknowledged the issues at the very least and suicide has seen a decline in the last decade. Korea ignores them and doubles down.

  5. Sadly this is the way to treat the symptoms of a overstressed society. Parents who don’t have the time or strength, will not give their children what is essential in young age.
Child negligence is way worse in the long run.

  6. The hell is Korea even doing compared to other countries that requires people to work so much?

  7. Eh Koreans are sending their kids to hakwon (secondary school/tutoring) after school anyway so it’s the same thing just free.

  8. lol the boy’s unimpressed face expression sitting next to the Korean president.

  9. … when do parents spend time with their own children??? this is insane

  10. My five year old is SPENT when he gets home from school at 3:15. We do 15-20 minutes of homework and then he’s done and it’s time to play with his toys and unwind. I can’t imagine doing this to him; he’d have a breakdown.

  11. yeah, THAT will help create mentally stable people that want to create more children to perpetuate the cycle.

the powers that be in Korea – Meaning the directors of Samsung and such really are a brain dead bunch. Their country is about to collapse, people have all but stopped having children because of the utterly fucked situation and their solution?

    More of the same.

The beatings will continue until morale improves it seems is the adage in the halls of power in Korea.

  12. Why would anyone have a child in South Korea? No wonder their birth rates are plummeting

  13. So not only is the population in rapid and catastrophic decline because of non existent birth rates, but even the couples who have children are too time poor to look after them?

  14. I’ve seen the curriculum in South Korea for high schools it’s really very modest. I know if I or any remotely healthy person worked so many hours, I’d be publishing results in topology at age 15 haha. Clearly it’s some kind of socially compelled appearance of working.

  15. Ah ok so someone i work with moved her family from South Korea to the UK “for a life”. This is what she meant.

  16. For those unfamiliar with Korea, this isn’t a new thing in terms of students being in school until late. Most students go to hagwons, which are private schools well into the night. I would often see groups of children walking home from school at 8 or even 9pm. However, now the Government public schools will offer evening classes.

  17. First graders need 10-11 hours of sleep. This means they’ll have almost no time with their parents each day 🙁

  18. This is terrible news…unrealistic beauty standards, overworked, highest suicide rate in any developed country and mega low birth rates. Let’s make kids stay in school longer hours lol

  19. If I’m born again, please don’t let me be born in Korea. I don’t want to be a child slave.

  20. Government raised children. You get to bring them back to your sleeping area though that’s modern ‘parenting’ apparently. How sad…
