Oliver Postgate’s gentle voice was a balm to my young soul. God bless him and the wonderful Peter Firmin too for making magic.

Wasn’t it a lovely voice? I wonder if it’s worth starting a ‘memorable voice’ thread, I’d put Viv Stanshall in there among the greats.
Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss
Old fat furry cat-puss
Wake up and look at this thing that I bring
Wake up, be bright
Be golden and light
Bagpuss, Oh hear what I sing
If you haven’t stumbled across him there’s a BBC documentary film maker called Adam Curtis. He’s a very distinctive style of using contemporary music, news and stock footage. His voiceovers are very reminiscent of Postgate’s narration. It really appeals to people of ….ahem…. a certain age and has a very immersive effect. They’re all on the iPlayer and, I believe, YouTube if you’re interested, *highly* recommended.
[This](https://youtu.be/9s8wAb0zFn8?si=PY-SZwNry5TcHZLz) is a clip of the intro to his incredible *Bitter Lake* (2015). If anyone wants to delve in I’d suggest starting with *Hypernormalisation*, then take your pick and move to the epic *Cant Get You Out Of My Head* series when you’re ready. I watched my first Curtis doc then binged the lot, practically without blinking lol.
I only ever watched bagpuss when I was home sick from school. Even hearing the theme tune makes me want to reach for a tissue to wipe my runny nose.
Anyway, happy birthday Bagpuss.
I was scared shitless by bagpuss as a kid. Still can’t watch it even now.
Loved Bagpuss! I’ll reiterate what another poster said, reminds me of being off school sick.
There was a good documentary about him on BBC 4 last night. (It’ll be on iPlayer)
Oliver Postgate: A Life In Small Films
was being shown on BBC4 last night. You might still be able to catch it on iPlayer. Recommended watch. (production company was named Small Films)
Watched the old documentary about him on BBC 4 yesterday, he seemed like a lovely man, I didn’t realise one of the episodes of the Clangers was all about Political campaigning.
