With tax and fuel costs just going through the roof, it doesn’t surprise me that people who can are switching. The cost to charge an electric is still tiny compared to a fuel car.
Just a shame this government won’t do anything to try a scheme that allows poorer people to get hold of them.
Imagine how completely fucking mad you need to be to consider the sale of 1,447,900+ fossil-fuel powered cars in 2021 a *win* for climate action!
It’s also interesting that they at no point mention hybrids. Are they being massaged into the ‘battery electric vehicle’ numbers?
[Edit] Having looked at the SMMT’s website – because both this guardian article and the BBC’s article are basically just a SMMT press release regurgitated verbatim – it looks like this actually is a figure for pure BEV’s, so at least they’re not fudging the stats that way.
Tesla was 9% of all cars sales in December, out of 26% overall EVs.
Whatever happened to hydrogen cars? I thought they would be the way forward. The only bi-product is water and hydrogen is the most abundant element on earth.
Aren’t Hybrids going to be affected by the london charge coming soon?

47% of all new cars sold were either BEV or PHEV
