‘Not desirable’: Student housing operators criticised for offering only 51-week tenancies

  1. This seems to be a surprising development. I suppose at the prices these guys are charging maybe short term let’s just aren’t so profitable compared to just renting the place (especially if it’s likely to be empty)?

    But at the same time we have an ongoing and well recognised shortage of tourist accommodation. Plus the government also seems pretty willing to rent out these sorts of developments in the summer months for accommodation purposes at the moment.

  2. A lot of student accommodation only offers 9 months because… students, with expectations they’ll go home for the summer. So ?

  3. From the article: Hines previously said the change was driven by “market trends” and an increase in inquiries about lengthier tenancies. Other student accommodation providers, including Yugo, have moved to a 51-week model across its various properties in Dublin and Cork.

    How was that allowed!?!?
