Europe must hurry to defend itself against Russia—and Donald Trump

  1. He does have a point, we need to spend more on defense and need to have proper armies. I don’t see what he gains from estranging his allies. If the EU ends up seeing no value in NATO and makes its own army, the US is stuck with Canada and Turkey… and since article 5 has only been invoked once and it was by the US, isn’t that a loss for them since they have shown to need it more than Europe? Especially in the case that Europe has to deal with Russia on its own, what use will NATO be for us then?

  2. Europe has to develop nukes beyong UK & France. MAD is the only deterrence

  3. Leftist propaganda trying to sway the world into thinking that Cognative decline Joe is the only other choice. I hope that RFK Jr gets in and starts dismantling the illegal enterprise that had become The USofA theconly sane choice the only choice with any cognative function.

  4. When Trump says he wants NATO countries to meet the 2% GDP on defence funding, he is alluding to fund it with the purchase of US military equipment which is a point everyone on this sub never talks about. Buy american but not european, that’s the US strategy and doing otherwise would make Uncle Sam very upset.

  5. Fun fact: Trump said that USA should not defend who doesn’t stay up with NATO’s military expenses (2%).

Europe reply was like: ok, we need to spend more to defend ourselves. Well, the point, actually, is that you didn’t spend what required, so if you plan to spend even more, you could just spend that 2% to start with, and the issue wouldn’t even exist.

Be sure, that doesn’t mean EU shouldn’t -or couldn’t- think about becoming military independent from USA, but that has much less to do with Trump than what they tell.

  6. Trump: “Start funding your militaries properly.”
    EU: “No.”
    Putin: *-happy imperialist noises-*

  7. The USA must hurry to defend itself against Trump.

  8. We’ve known for decades that we can’t stay reliant on US firepower. We have been warned by the first trump presidency. But we didn’t listen. Let’s all act surprized by old news, as if we didn’t see this coming! We have been using the US as our own private defense, and because of inaction have created a situation where politically we can only buy their weapons and we can’t even create our own military industrial complex anymore because any politician who will attempt to produce our own weapons in Europe will be swiftly taken out by the American intelligence community as a ‘communist thug’ or whatever bs reason they’ll come up with. We cut ourselves, willingly, and then we say, shit look at it bleed!

  9. America is an economic powerhouse but as the world’s foremost superpower they are in decline and receding back into isolationism regardless of who is in office.

The ball is in Europe’s court whether they want to step up. I’m not suggesting America is suddenly going to lose its position in our lifetimes but the playing field will eventually level out and the question is does Europe step up or do other more adversarial blocks.

  10. This is maybe an example of a good development coming from a global crisis. A self sufficient liberal Europe will hopefully keep civilized humanity afloat in the event USA falls further to MAGA/putin

  11. I love how Trump’s is getting exactly what he wanted: A military minded Europe who gets serious about their military budgets. You people think Trump is dumb but he’s already won.

  12. I’m not in Europe, but what’s the general feeling in places like Spain, France, and Germany: do they want more spending via tax increases to pump their military spending or spending cuts in other areas to boost military spending?

How’s the general mood on the economy?

  13. I want to hear from people smarter and more educated than me. Just to be clear – I think Putin is a war criminal, liar and all around not a very nice person (how Norm McDonald would say). I just want to know how this attack on Europe would look like if they are in kind of a stalemate in Ukraine already? Do they really have that powerful army and EU such a shitty one? Or is “attack on EU” just a phrase used for attack on other Baltic countries – still horrible, or course. Is there a real possibility that this asshole attacks the whole union?

  14. the amount of brain gymnastics in the comments and the title of this post. lmao you guys got a problem

  15. Yeah. We must. It might also unfortunately be a time to look to China for economic alliances to neuter trump’s eventual trade war.

  16. We almost should hope for Trump to be elected – personally I’m neutral since Biden is a pathetic opponent and I don’t really care about an election between a fool and a criminal – but at least Trump purposely or unpurposely might just be able to get europe to wake the fuck up and start spending some serious amounts of money on their own army defences instead of endlessly relying on the USA.

  17. Ironically this is what Trump was trying to achieve so politically what he said is working

  18. Almost every single thing he does or says benefits Russia, and hurts the US!

USA quickly lose credibility among their allies, meaning the allies won’t rely on buying weapon systems from USA. What do you do with HIMARS launchers or F-35 fighters, if you cannot be sure you can buy more missiles when Russia knocks on your door?

You can’t wait for the dysfunctional American political system to get their heads out of their asses while you are waiting to put in an order for more ammunition to stop the invaders.

  19. As long as it doesn’t defend itself against illegal migration, crime and rising poverty, it’s all good 👍

  20. Lol it’s just called nuclear saber rattling. Join the party

  21. But not the hordes of illegals who hate them that are taking over their countries and destroying their citizens way of life?

  22. You know what’s a great way of doing that? Pay the NATO requested minimum defense contributions.

  23. but media told me Russia is using washing machines on the battlefield

  24. Im rather more afraid of a muslim take over that the eu tryes to push onto us.

  25. I hope that europe will leave america and make alliance with china, usa is failed country who elects childs molester as president and we shouldnt have anything to do with them

  26. This is something that has worried me for years, but in a best-case scenario it could spell the rise of Europe as an independent power and bring the union closer together.

The yanks always had it in them to abandon liberalism and become an isolationist classical-conservative mess, but I’m amazed that a country that was once (admittedly over 200 years ago) a beacon of late-enlightenment era liberal political thinking has fell down this pit so quickly, and are basically willing to give up their superpower status for more money (that, let’s be honest, they aren’t going to invest in anything meaningful like subsidised healthcare or remotely modern infrastructure).

Either way, it’s very likely that this will be the route that they take and frankly it’s their choice to do so, even if it reeks of populist lies, anti-pragmatism and the same kind of American arrogance that has become all to familiar to us.

On the other hand though, I genuinely think that assuming we begin acting soon whilst Russia is tied down in Ukraine, a revised way of thinking about collective defence through some sort of euro-centric liberal institutional framework (NATO or the EU, take your pick), could not only allow us to get into a position where we can defend ourselves, but also allow us more soft power to spread our ideals across the world.

Not saying the US is absolutely gone as a defensive ally, but we should be thinking about collective defence and potential further integration now, we are already halfway there with UK and France having Nukes but that only forms one part of the idea.

Furthermore, as much as Russia may be declining, but that only increases the possibility of a Thucydides Trap scenario in my eyes, so regardless of that we need to be looking at this immediately, even if it takes several years for Russia to be in a position to attack a NATO country.

TLDR: prepare for US abandoning Europe by pushing for further integration into collective European defence. If we do this it could spark the EU becoming the next liberal power to counter the authoritarian world, we need to do this now.

  27. Based Trump, uniting Europe against its will. Will this man ever stop winning!?!?!
