Why not just pay their bills? That’s basically what Trump is telling them to do.
I spent a year stationed in Europe and trained alongside troops from many European countries. They’re the most important allies we have, and although we know now that the Russian military is an absolute joke compared to previous perception, and that European powers would have no problem with the Russians even without us, the strength of an alliance is in the cooperation and bond between its members.
The point is to prevent a conflict from happening, to make sure our adversaries never even entertain the idea of attacking, for both their sake and ours. This kind of rhetoric is cowardly at best, geopolitically harmful and even existentially dangerous at worst. This man is not fit to command our military.
And let’s not forget that European nations stood beside us during the ONLY activation of Article 5 in the alliance’s history, after 9/11. They fought and died on our behalf, who the fuck are we to turn away from them?
Better wake up and become your own a self sufficient United States of Europe, before Russia attacks you. Putin has compromised lot of NATO countries, using evil people like Trump. So depending on America to come to your help is suicidal, not reliable specially if parties prop up douches who are willing to go corrupt to stay in power.
The US really is stuck between a rock and a hard place, isn’t it?
good!
stronger Europe = better for NATO
Honestly, maybe his idiotic and dangerous comment will inadvertently scare them into shape
Trump failed history class. He’s an example of why 2 years of compulsory military duty ought to be required for everyone, male, female, and the gender confused.
Trump should never be president again. He continues to deliberately spread misinformation about NATO and incites irrational anger based on misinformation.
Facts:
* NATO’s article 5 was invoked once only after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the US.
* Russia has never attacked NATO countries, but Russia keeps invading non-NATO countries. NATO is a security alliance.
* There are no “bills” in NATO as he claimed.
* The 2% is a guideline, not legally binding. Russia attacking any NATO countries will automatically get article 5 invoked.
* Ukraine also fought along with NATO members in Afghan and Iraq war. Ukrainian soldiers sacrificed their lives along with NATO allies in Afghan and Iraq war.
Edit: – Russia has never *invaded NATO countries, but has [assassinated people](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poisoning_of_Sergei_and_Yulia_Skripal) in NATO countries.
Probably a good idea since Putin obviously intends to continue this.
this is a good time to remind the general public that military personnel are only required to obey “lawful” orders.
If an order to, say attack an ally nation is given by the chief of staff (the president) every general not bought and paid for is well within their rights to just say “no.”
That cost money the thing you didn’t want to do
Stop playing into their bs propaganda, no one is attacking fukin NATO
Sounds good to me and good for humanity.
for those who are NATO skeptical, here is a link to why having small countries in a big boy alliance is actually a huge win
(yes, ofc its a Perun slideshow)

Trump is a disgusting person and anyone who follows him will regret the choice.
NATO has been short changed by Western Europe (particularly Germany) and Canada for a generation. To the extent Germany once showed up to NATO exercises with sticks instead of guns, and only 100 operable tanks (down from 7000 in the cold war).
Hundreds of billions were saved by relying on the U.S. for strategic defense. NATO countries were begged by successive administrations to spend more on their defense, and stop propping up Russia’s military buildup by buying all their energy exports.
Now the bill is coming due. Non-U.S. NATO has very little to contribute in military equipment in the near term, but they should be paying *all* the economic and financial support of the Ukraine economy. Similarly they should pay *all* the rebuilding costs.
Trumps words are harmful to NATO, but not nearly as harmful as the systemic long-standing underinvestment in their defense and propping up of Russia defense spending by NATO allies.
Is this all just elaborate theater to give more money to billionaires invested in weapons development?
I feel like the US is just gonna sell weapons to Europe to line the pockets of the oligarch class
Maybe I’m too cynical now :/
NATO is supposed to support European militaries, not replace them.
Europe wants all the attention while the very real threat of China to US territories in the Pacific is ignored. Europe should be able to stand on its own feet against Russia so the US can position as much of our forces as possible in the Pacific.
