American here. My sister in law (God bless her) has proposed this trip to Scotland https://www.macsadventure.com/us/tour-2039/skye-the-outer-hebrides/ for her 50th birthday. If you don’t want to click on the link it’s a six day walking tour of the Isle of Sky and the Outer Hebrides. I’m I being a complete asshole by refusing to go because I don’t like walking that much? Or, I’m I missing out on a trip of my life?

I mean, you are an American, so you are quite probably an asshole, but that is OK, we will take your tourist $$$$$ regardless. The Isle of Skye is fucking amazing but it does have roads and you could decide which parts you want to get out of the car for. Never been to the Outer Hebrides – that seems like just a trip too far from Glasgow, but I think they have roads too – same conditions apply.
I don’t think you’re an asshole if you’re not big into hill walking. Absolutely do visit Scotland and the Hebrides, though, because they’re gorgeous. The isle of Skye is particularly beautiful.
Disclaimer: I’m biased, I love them
Further note: not everywhere on Skye has great cell service, and it sounds a bit sketchy to me that they suggest unmarked routes with the promise of their “Macs Adventure smartphone app” and “you should know how to use a map and compass”
I didn’t vote for Trump in the last two elections and I wish you’d have gotten out of Brexit. But, I love your response.
Fuck it. Go and make the trip.
Just ensure you are in separate lodgings from the SiL and don’t adhere rigidly to her schedule. Family trips have their place but can be miserable if you’re with the same people day in/day out in close quarters.
It’s a walking trip, not serious hiking. You won’t be climbing the Rockies. We were made to walk so get busy booking and get busy walking.
Just mind the midges.
American here- I’m studying abroad in Scotland. I just got back from the Isle of Skye and it was so worth it. I really enjoy walking, though. I still think you should go because it is insanely gorgeous.
I’ve done that trip with a different provider and it was spectacular. My dad’s from the Hebrides and so it was very nice to go back to his home (although we didn’t actually visit where he’s from on the tour, we did go to lots of places familiar to him and then to his home straight after). But if you don’t like walking I wouldn’t do it, you’re paying for guided walks, and that trip is 10-12 miles of walking a *day*.
